Then, Yosuke (one of the Japanese friends I was staying with) Phil, and I went out to the country--Yosuke had bought an old temple and had turned it into a country house. |

Later we went out to an old town that hadn't changed since the Meiji period (about 300 years ago). |

In a temple, there was a Madonna with its head chopped off as a warning to the early Christians(1600's)--the Japanese Government felt that the West (in the form of the church) was a threat to their authority. |
