Outdoor Leadership
RTM 452 |
Overall class purpose: increase effectiveness in leadership of outdoor programs.
- Class does include a weekend field trip to Joshua Tree National Park.
- Outdoor education is "education in or about the out-of-doors'". Leadership of outdoor programs demand the execution of important skills and attitudes in order to provide safe outdoor programs that achieve indentifed outcomes.
- The greatest amount of time in this course will be spent on safety management. Safety mangement topics include:.
- Decision making strategies that depend on thinking skills
- the "good judgement" approach
- the 'fast think and slow think' process
- The 'procedures, protocols, and checklists' approach to safety will be extensively explored.
- Though the focus is clearly on the outdoor setting - the skills and models are transferable to other leadership settings.
- The class is best with RTM 351 as a prepatory class but the prerequisite will be waived by instructor consent.
- RTM 452 is only offered one time a year in Spring semester.
- RTM 452 will focus on learn by doing (experiential ed) for some limited field experience but the balance of the class will need to be online. The key field experience is as an important application of the course. The weekend field class dates will be announced.
- The meeting time for the class will be Wednesday 7:00 - 9:45 (with some online sessions).
- The class is great for serious outdoor educator types but also valuable for anyone interested in leadership development in general (though clearly our primary context is outdoor leadership).
