Classes In Waiting

Just in case you were wondering about my other teaching assignments?

Summary of Teaching Assignments:

The current course schedule  is listed on my faculty front page. My traditional classes focus on the broad areas of developing tools in leadership, management, and multi-cultural education in addition to a specialty area in outdoor experiential education.

Some of the classes below have a link to a generic page describing the class content - others are simply listed by course number, title, and brief description.

RTM 302 - Leadership in Recreation and Human Services teaches leadership theory and research with an experiential focus on personal leadership.

RTM 303 - Promotion of Recreation Services teaches a marketing theory framework out of which the tools and methods to promote programs are developed.

RTM 304 - Entrepreneurial Ventures in Recreation and Human Services begins with a study of the entreprenuer and creativity and then reviews the business steps necessary to achieve your creative ideas culminating in a comprehensive business plan.

RTM 310 - Adventure Recreation and Human Relations focuses on issues of personal identity and cultural diversity.  A non-traditional class that uses adventure based experiences to better understand your self, your world view, and how to better relate to the diversity of people groups in our world.  The "best upper division GE class on the campus"  according to some students.

RTM 300 - Community Development and Recreation addresses how recreation is a significant partner in fostering youth development and providing a quality of life in communities. The course reviews research on the assests model for youth development and issues in youth culture. Community development is explored from both a historical and contemporary sociological model. A host of urban issues are explored and the creative response from the recreation field. A community service learning experience is required in addition to individual and group projects.

RTM 351 - Outdoor Education Methods is a great class for those who are interested in how to use experiential education methods with groups of people.  Half the class focuses on educational design for programs that teach folks about the out-of-doors and the other half focuses on the facilitation of experiential designs that can be held anywhere - from teaching 6th graders how to cooperate in the classroom - to coaching executive leaders - to leading teams in the board room.

RTM 444 - Non-profit Fund Raising and Management is a great introductory class on leadership in the non-profit organization.  Approximately a third of the class focuses on the roles and function of the non-profit board and executive director where the balance of the class introduces the fund raising process for non-profit organizations.

RTM 452 Outdoor Leadership has the overall purpose to increase effectiveness in leadership of outdoor programs. Outdoor education is "education in or about the out-of-doors". Leadership of outdoor programs demands the execution of important skills and attitudes. The class focses on the assessment and development of those skills and attitudes so that leades provide safe outdoor programs that achieve identified outcomes. The class is best with RTM 351 as a prepatroy class but it is not a prerequisite.

RTM 620 Leadership and Teams in Tourism, Hospitality, and Recreation Organizations

Explore issues of organizational change, organizational leadership and team effectiveness in recreation, hospitality, and tourism organizations.

RTM 151 - Introduction to the Backcountry is a wonderful way to develop a life long recreational sport.  Highly experiential - these classes teach you everything you need to know to explore the out-of-doors with personal safety and environmental sensitivities.  Take advantage of the best value ticket to acquiring outdoor skills and knowledge.
