Assignment reprieve!! Hey - the posting of student papers for you to review has been cancelled. So forget about that part of the research papers assignment. Gettting your paper in completes that assignment.

Remember as you push toward the end - to check in with the assignments page and complete what remains. Table summary of assignment due dates.

Previous news releases: Please check to make sure you are up-to-date.

Fun Life Quotes:

"How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live." Henry David Thoreau (Journal, 10 August 1851)

Previous news items are listed below from most recent to least recent.

Quizzes for Units 4, 5, and 6 are up now for those who have been working through the material. Please keep abreast of the deadlines for assignments as listed on the assignments page (I adjusted the deadlines for Quizzes 4-6 based on my delay in posting the exams).

Remember that due date information is on the assignments page plus this table summary of assignment due dates.

Online discussion on Louv are required before Quiz 6.

Online review of other student's research summaries are also required - for details see the assignments page.

March 24, 2009

1) Approaching Due Date: March 31 is the for Outdoor Recreation activity research paper. Remember you must submit both the 'summary table' and the 5 page paper. The links for the outline for the paper and the template for the 'table' are found through the assignments page.

2) Grades on Quiz 1, 2, 3- a few did very well - others not so well. Quiz 2 which is the easiest of the bunch had very high scores. Quiz 1 and Quiz 3 had a big range - the big problem was weak essay responses. In order to allow you to see the essay score, I put an additional column in the scores on the webct grade sheet. Your overall score on the quiz is first column (e.g. 73%) - the points scored on the essay are in the next column - (for example: 23/30 = 23 points awarded out of 30 points possible). I will offer students an opportunity to re-submit answers to an essay question if the want to put inthe extra work. Full credit will not be possible but an improvement in essay score is possible. Students interested should contact me via email and I will send them the details.

Congratulations on passing the mid-term point. Breath a bit, the next set of unit lectures (4, 5, & 6) will be ready to go next week.

What about grades? I needed to wait for all the exams to be submitted before doing final grades on the quizzes 1, 2, 3. Should have them posted by next week at this time along with the grades on your Lifestyle Audits. The grade link will be from the WebCT page.

Keep working on your research paper as it's due March 31 and you can start reading the second half of the Louv text as well.

February 23, 2009

Quiz 2 is now posted so you should be proceeding with lecture two and then study and take the quiz. Remember to check the assignment pages to keep up on due dates. Quiz 3 is also ready for you once you have finished the reading material. Due to the time shortage there will be no discussion boards on the material from lecture number 2 & 3.

PLEASE, please, please . . . now that assignments are flooding my inbox please take note of the details for submitting assignments electronically ). Assignments should come as attached files and the file name should include your name and assignement name - I know it sounds trivial but from a teacher standpoint it's kinda like getting a traditional paper submitted with no name on it and the detail of fixing that multiplied by 40 takes too much time. Thanks. Al

February 4, 2009.

Class continues. Some students are adding late. Remember to see earlier postings below. Discussion questions to help your thinking and your preparation for Quiz 1 are now available at the "Thumb tack" icon at the WebCT page. Also - the environmental lifestyle assignment is due next week (see assignments page).

January 28, 2009

Sorry the updates have been slow but here are expectations as we've moved into week # 2.

1. make sure you did the assignment for week 1 which is under previous news releases.

2. begin the topics in lecture one (which really is reading for you not a podcast lecture from me).

3. begin the assignment entitled Environmental Lifestyle Audit which you can find from the assignments link page.

4. begin reading the class text - Last Child in th Woods.

Several students are getting undelivered email due to "quota full" messages - so if you don't know - your csun email account needs to be cleaned out occasionally. Since all class emails go to that box, it's important to clean it up to get occasional class email reminders. If it is not your primary email put in a referral email as suggested in the Guide to Success page.

January 20, 2009

COURSE PAGES ARE STILL BEING UPDATED. CHECK BACK LATER for full course launch. But you can get started by completing these four steps.

1. Review the 'guide to success' including the Sam story

2. Review 'the FAQ' page.

3. Review the generic syllabus (a more detailed one will be posted later this week).

4. Purchase the Last Child in the Woods book by Richard Louv from your favorite online resource. (for the super motivated - start reading at page one. )
