Proposition 8

by Luis A. Lopez

Controversy has been boiling up since the California State Supreme Court allowed gay marriages.

However, while some Californians were proud to eliminate another form of legal oppression, another group of Californian became outraged at the whole situation.

In the November 4t General Election, the question of gay marriage will once again be in the hands of the general public who will be able to vote on the question of gay marriage. Prop 8 makes it extremely difficult for individuals to choose how they will vote. Unfortunately, lies and deceptions have been used to trick people into wanting to vote Yes on 8.

Proposition 8 solely refers to the legal right for gay and lesbian couples to get married by law. It has nothing to do with marriages that occur in a place of worship. It does not force any religion to allow any gay and lesbian couple to marry if not permitted by their religious beliefs. Unlike many television ads that support 8, nothing is being taken away from the church and schools will not be forced to teach about gay marriage.

Neither of the two institutions will be altered at any point because of proposition 8. All the propaganda about how churches will be sued if they do not allow gay marriage and how schools will be forced to teach about gay marriage is completely false and is a form of extreme malice.

The proposition is only permitting gay and lesbian couples to get married under law by voting No and taking away that human right by voting Yes.

Voters can read this in the official ballot pamphlet that is mailed to their homes or read it on line at http://www.voterguide.sos.ca.gov/title-sum/prop8-title-sum.htm with links to the translated versions in seven different languages along with the rest of the propositions. The only thing voters will find in proposition 8 is that they are voting on the basic human right to marry.
