Math 320
Foundations of Higher Mathematics

The goal of this course is to help students transition from a primarily computational mode of doing mathematics to a more conceptual mode. The emphasis will be on proofs, which are taught in the context of elementary number theory, combinatorics and analysis; the language of sets, relations, order, equivalence classes, functions cardinality, and the definition of number are introduced. Students are expected to write large numbers of proofs and communicate mathematical ideas clearly.

Class Meetings              Tuesday & Thursdays, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., Chaparral Hall 5114

Prerequisite
Math 150B

Grading
There will be two midterm exams, each worth 20%, and a final exam worth 40% of the grade.  Homework will constitute 20% of the grade.  Class participation will resolve borderline grades, with the possibility, for example, of a final B+ grade becoming an A-, with constructive participation and volunteering solutions in class.  Plus (+) and minus (–) grades will be assigned for this course.  The dates of the midterms will be announced in class.

Final Exam: Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Exam 2 on topics covered since Exam 1, Thursday, Dec 1

Student behavior, academic dishonesty, university policies

Please arrive on time and avoid leaving early.  No text messaging.  Cell phones should be turned off during class and all exams and quizzes.  Seats may be reassigned during exams, and you must leave your ID on top of the desk.  You will need to turn in an exam or quiz if you leave the room, so go to the bathroom beforehand.  Academic Dishonesty is covered in Appendix C of the CSUN catalog. Academic dishonesty will be reported to the Office of Student Affairs.  For information about CSUN's policy for academic dishonesty, see:   http://www.csun.edu/catalog/policies/academic-dishonesty/

Note also that according to CSUN policy, a grade that is sanctioned due to academic dishonesty cannot be replaced by subsequent course grades:

This syllabus is subject to change during the semester.  Any changes will be posted here and announced in class.
