Why take this course?

Environmental Terrorism. Global Warming. Hazardous Wastes. The West Nile Virus. And the list goes on... A wide array of characters have weighed in on environmental issues: people from Erin Brockovich to Rush Limbaugh have made some pretty disturbing allegations. Some of it true, some of it not...

A lot of people are scared. Others are skeptical.

So here's a novel idea: instead of being guided by public figures with an agenda of fear, votes, or higher ratings, why not look at the issues with a professor of environmental health? Sort the fallacies from the serious risks.

This course satisfies the upper division general education requirement.**   The field of environmental health has a tremendous need for new professionals. And hey, we're talkin' about the freakin' planet....

** --  This course satisfies g.e. section E (Lifelong Learning).  The official university goal for this section is: “Students should understand how human beings function in various physical, social, cultural, and technological environments.”  We think this course is perfect for this goal by covering the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of our environment along with social, cultural, and technological considerations.

How can this course help me in my chosen major?

Many different professionals and academics have important applications in environmental health:

  • Physicians (environmental and occupational medicine)
  • Lawyers (environmental law)
  • Artists (environmental art)
  • Business managers and entrepreneurs (meeting and anticipating environmental regulations)
  • Scientists of virtually all kinds (environmental research)
  • Historians, writers, and academics of all kinds
  • Given the nature of the subject, it's impossible to imagine any student that would not benefit from a background in environmental health.

Is there a demand for environmental health?

The demand for environmental health professionals is huge! Also, a background in this field adds value to any professional. Consider the following:

  • Various studies indicate a severe shortage of trained environmental health professionals.
  • The Surgeon General of the United States recently sent his high level Professional Advisory Committee directly to CSUN. The reason? To recruit environmental health professionals.
  • Various organizations, from government agencies to private industry,  offer paid internships to our students before they graduate.  Why do they offer it? To recruit environmental health professionals.
