DIG #1 – The League of Nations: Opposing Views

Over the course of the semester you will have several opportunities to “dig” into some primary sources on topics related to the secondary sources we discuss in class.

The first Dig focuses on the fight over U.S. membership in the League of Nations. Below are links to three sharply contrasting viewpoints on that issue.

Read the statements by Wilson, Lodge, and Borah and answer the following questions. Be sure to introduce evidence from the sources to support what you write.

1.    What seem to be the most fundamental issues upon which these three politicians differ most sharply?

2.    How do their respective visions of the United States and the role it should play in the world differ?

3.    Indicate which of the three YOU believe makes the strongest case for his position and explain why.

You should turn in this assignment in class on Wednesday, September 9th.

Please type and double-space your responses. Try to answer all three questions in less than 1200 words.
