Writing Assignment #3
Choose an
“everyday” word or phrase from Drakulic’s book How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed –
strawberries, Golub, sanitary napkins, doll, or red
hair dye, for example – and in a one-page response paper (2-4 paragraphs)
indicate how, in the context of Drakulic’s book, this
word or phrase takes on a more significant meaning.
As we did
in class today, draw the connection between “A” (the word you choose – “red
hair dye”) and “B” (the larger point it illustrates – “the power of the state”).
You need to have the logical connection clear in your mind before you start typing, so write it (or draw it) out on
scratch paper ahead of time. Make sure all the logical connections are there,
and only then start typing your paper.
This is
only a short assignment, but put some effort into it. Strive to be as clear and
informative as you can in only a few words – much like Drakulic’s
writing style in her book.
Please bring a hard copy of this assignment to class on Thursday.
