Welcome

Welcome to Mrs. Milliken's Life Science/Health page. I have been teaching at Woodland Hills Academy for 6 years now and enjoy teaching 7th grade very much! Before becoming a teacher I worked in the veterinary field as a veterinary technician for 11 years, and decided it was time for a change. Science is such a fascinating subject, allowing you to understand the world around you. I believe that my passion and excitment for Science will excite my students about learning and exploring new scientific concepts!

Besides teaching and being a student myself, my life revolves around my family. I adore my husband and my son very much, and look forward to spending all my free time with them.

Professional Information

I have graduated from CSUN with my B.S. in Biology in 1999, and later went back in 2003 to obtain a single subject teaching credential in Science. Currently I am working on my Master's degree in the field of Education. I value education very much, and hope to instill this desire in all of my students.

Academic Goals

I am a gluten for punishment! After I complete my M.S. in Education I plan to pursue an administrative credential and my Masters in Administration.

Background- Eating Disorders Anorexia

Eating disorders are behavioral issues brought on by a complex interplay of factors, which may include emotional and personality disorders, family pressures, a possible genetic or biologic susceptibility, and a culture in which there is an overabundance of food and an obsession with thinness. There are three general categories of eating disorders:

  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Binge eating

These are not new disorders. Although anorexia nervosa was first defined as a medical problem in the late 1800s, descriptions of self-starvation have been found even in medieval writings.

Eating disorders affect predominantly women (but also many men), an eating disorder is far more than just a food and weight obsession. Incidences of eating disorders are on the rise, and affect both men & women predominantly in Western countries.

It is easy to draw statistical conclusions as to the direct causes of an eating disorder, but no person is alike and each case has its own root causes - although patterns do emerge after studying a number of cases.
