Barry has had a long term interest in the area of the sociology of sexual behavior and sexual politics. His involvements have included teaching, research and activism in the area of sexual civil liberties.

Background:
Barry received his doctorate in sociology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, writing his dissertation on homosexual identity development.  His 1971 article "Coming Out in the Gay World" has come to be regarded a seminal article in the area of gay studies. At CAL STATE LONG BEACH he taught the first accredited course ever on homosexuality as well as co-founding the first officially recognized gay students union in California. He has been involved in the area of sexual politics for some 25 years.  Most recently he has been a vocal critic of efforts to ban student-professor romantic relationships; created the academic sexual correctness list on the internet; became the EDITOR-IN-CHIEF of SEXUALITY & CULTURE, and Acting President of the Foundation for the Advancement of Sexual Equity.  He also serves on the Board of Advisors for the Erotic Entertainers Guild.
