Preliminary (Level I) Credential-DHH
Education Specialist Credential- Deaf/Hard of Hearing
The Education Specialist Credential in DHH is typically 50-51 units. All of our courses within the DHH Specialization are offered in the afternoons and evenings. The program begins with coursework in Special Education and General Education methods. Following that foundational coursework, students begin taking classes in the DHH Specialization area.
The Credential Office at CSUN provides a variety of services for people interested in obtaining credential information. While the faculty in DHH do the advising for DHH credential students, admission to the credential program begins with an application through the Credential Office. Forms and guidelines are available on their website.
CSUN offers 4 pathways to the Education Specialists Credential in DHH.
- Traditional Program, a post BA program for candidates in non-teaching or teaching positions interested in flexible scheduling.
- Intern Program, post BA two-year program designed for teachers who are eligible for an intern credential and are hired in a cooperating school district.
- Accelerated Collaborative Teacher (ACT) program, a post BA full time four-semester program, offered collaboratively with District 2 in the Los Angeles Unified School District. (Fall admission only).
- Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) undergraduate program with candidates beginning as freshmen or entering the two-year option as transfer students, earning their credential and bachelor's degree in liberal studies concurrently.

It is strongly recommended that students have a high degree of ASL fluency and take the ASLPI prior to enrolling in DHH Specialization coursework. These classes are taught in ASL.

Requirements Prior to Student Teaching (applications must be filed the semester before Student Teaching)
- Overall GPA of 2.75 since admission with cumulative 3.0 GPA in Professional Education Courses.
- Passage of CBEST
- Writing Proficiency
- Passage of American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI)
- Approval for Student Teaching
