My Educational Philosophy...

More than 2000 years have passed since Socrates cautioned his students that ‘the unexamined life is not worth living.’ Such a statement reveals a basic guideline of my own philosophy of education: education is a process in which the individual must routinely question the foundations of self-knowledge in order to acquire self-actualization. The aspiration of such a process is the creation of a total individual.

Integral to my philosophy of education is the notion that each student is a unique individual and must be treated with respect and dignity. The student must be taught how to learn as well as how to think. Through this process of self-actualization, the instructor must treat the student as an extension of her/himself. In this way, the improvement of the student is necessarily the improvement of the instructor. This explains why I teach since I too am a student in search of self-improvement.

The relationship between student and instructor is grounded in mutual trust. The role of the instructor is to facilitate the students to reveal their knowledge through an open and ongoing dialogue of questions and answers. Such dialogues are predicated on trust and mutual respect. The ultimate purpose of education is to produce individuals who strive for excellence for themselves, their community and for the future generations.
