Historical & Political Circumstances

There are many issues that encompass war. Many circumstances have lead to this juncture of terrorism. Knowing the circumstances that lie before is a start in beginning to understand why terrorism has been the way. Hostility with the United States commenced when Europeans and Americans began to exploit the oil fields in the Middle East . “During and after World War II, the region became a primary object of U.S. foreign policy. It was then that policymakers realized that the Middle East was a stupendous source of strategic power, and one of the greatest material prizes in world history" (Richman). Oil was the leading force to power and profit. Knowing this the United States tried to take a hold on part of this coveted prize. Soviet Union also want a portion of the prize however before they were able to take any part the U.S. funded Israel with millions of dollars in military and economic assistance. Over several decades this aid that the United States bequeath upon Israel has lead to the bitter and dangerous conflicts that lie among Israel and its neighboring countries as well as distrust and resentment towards the U.S. which has lead to terrorist acts among each other. “Addressing the conditions of misery and injustice that nourish and aggravate terrorism” (Petchesky p.26) may be the only way to truly bring an end to this war of terrorism.

Race

The war on terror is not a new concept. Terrorist and terrorist groups have been around for quite awhile. However this term has taken on a new meaning after the attacks of September 11. Every American news channel plastered the term “WAR ON TERROR,” across our screens. It was used so often, it seemed the media truly thrived on human fear and suffering. Civilians were asking the questions, “are we at war?” and “who will pay?” Rinku Sen states “There is no question that the events on September 11 took a terrible toll on this country. However, the Bush administration lost no time in converting the grief, outrage, and deep need to “do something” felt by many Americans into a message of racially based vengeance (7).” Americans felt a need for revenge; therefore, people of Arab decent were the target. Now like never before, racial profiling was supported and expected by Americans in effort to apprehend the terrorists. The People of Arab decent who are living in America are the ones truly living in fear.

Gender

The “War on Terror” from a gender perspective encompasses three points. First, is the often-ignored facet of war—patriarchy. How has patriarchal militarism motivated the “War on Terror” and continued the subjection of and violence against women? How has the Bush Administration used the plight of Afghan women as a source of political power to encourage US support for the war? Second, how has the “War on Terror” effected the lives of Afghan women? Has it made their situation better or worse? And third, how has the “War on Terror” effected women in the US ? How has racial and religious prejudice played a role?

Class

Does the “War on Terror” represent all of the interest of the American people?  Does George W. Bush represent those interests?  The question also is who
Benefits the rich or the poor? President George W. Bush and government say they represent all of the American people but that is not what he is doing. He
represents the interests of multinational companies who oppose better pay and pensions for workers. He represents companies who want to pollute the U.S. and
the world. His goal is to privatize the entire government sector of the U.S. , and transfer that wealth to his friends that own huge corporations.  Is
Bush is destroying the Federal government budget in the United States by giving billions and even, believe it or not, trillions of dollars in tax cuts to his wealthy business supporters. At the same time, he is cutting money for school lunches, medical care and education for poor children.  Even during the middle of this war, Bush's Republican Party proposed a budget that reduced funding for military veterans' health care by billions of dollars even while the troops were still in the field and his party is calling on all Americans to support the troops. So are all Americans benefiting form the war on terror like Bush wants us to believe?
