Responses to Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When trying to register in a class I receive the error message:
    Course previously taken. (14640,175)
Enrollment not allowed during priority registration.
Refer to the campus repeat policy for further details.
    What does that mean?
  2. Answer:  This error message will appear when you are trying to sign up for a course that you have taken before (and probably not passed) during the priority registration period.  You can begin to sign up for repeated courses during the Expanded Registration Period.

  3. I am having trouble signing up for Chemistry 101.  Are there any special rules for that course?
  4. Answer:  Yes, Chemistry 101 has three parts, the lecture, the discussion and the laboratory (101L).  The lecture and discussion are paired into Component Groups.  For example, if the schedule of classes shows Component Group A as:
    13486      Lecture      MWF 0800 – 0850
    13499      Discussion      M 0900 – 0950
    13500      Discussion      W 0900 – 0950
and you want the 13486 lecture you must also take ONE of the two discussion sections listed below it.  If you want the 13499 discussion, you only enroll in that ticket number (13499).  You will then be automatically be enrolled into 13486, do not place it on your list of courses to add.  The other important element to adding Chem 101 is that the lab, Chem 101L is an enforced corequisite.  Thus, you must ALSO select a 101L section and add it AT THE SAME TIME as the discussion.  Otherwise, the discussion will not be added.  A student wanting the 13399 discussion and the 13413 lab would add both of these on the same screen before submitting.  They would then be enrolled in 13486, 13499 and 13413.

  5. I can register for my computer science lab (110L,122L, etc.) but I cannot register for the corresponding lecture (110, 122, etc.).  Do I need a permission number?
  6. Answer:  No, you do not need a permission number now.  Computer Science sets up its lecture/lab courses so that you register for the lab ONLY prior to classes beginning.  Be sure to attend the corresponding lecture course on the first day of class and they will give you a permission number to add at that time.  If you register for a lab you a guaranteed a seat in the corresponding lecture.

  7. I am currently enrolled in a math course that is prerequisite to the math course I need next semester.  Why can’t I enroll in next semester’s course?

Answer: The math department requires that you have actually completed the prerequisite course before they let you enroll in a course.  This is different than other departments.  If you are currently take a math course that is prerequisite to the course you need next semester wait until you grade is posted in SOLAR.  As soon as it is posted you should be able to enroll in the next course.

  8. What grade is required in a course to meet a major or general education requirement?
  9. Answer: A “C-“ or better is required for each course in the major.  This includes all math, science, engineering, and computer science courses.  A “D” or better is required in general education courses.  Note that some math and chemistry courses may require a “C” in the prerequisite courses.

  10. What is GE Plan R and should I switch to this plan?
  11. Answer: GE Plan R is a new plan for general education that began in Fall 2006.  If you entered CSUN before Fall 2006 and are under the old GE Plan C, you may switch to Plan R.  Plan R may require that you take fewer GE classes than were required under Plan C.  It is recommended that you meet with the ECE Undergraduate Advisor to determine if you should switch to Plan R.

  12. Is the Humanities/Social Science Concentration still required for Electrical and Computer Engineering majors?
  13. Answer: No, this requirement has been removed for all ECE students.

  14. When do I start my graduation evaluation (grad check) and finalize my senior electives?
  15. Answer: The graduation evaluation/senior elective selection process begins three semesters before your planned graduation.  Spring/summer graduates should begin this process in the spring semester, one year before their graduation.  Fall graduates should begin this process in the Fall semester one year before their graduation.  The process begins by meeting with the ECE Undergraduate Advisor.  Appointments for the initiation of the graduation evaluation can be made by contacting the staff in the ECE office.

  16. If I have already filed my graduation evaluation and want to change my senior electives, what do I do?
  17. Answer: In order to change your senior electives you must obtain approval from the ECE department chair.  To obtain this approval complete a course substitution form in the ECE department office.

  18.  When do I begin to take my senior level (400 level) major courses?
  19. Answer: Students can begin to take their 400 level major courses as soon as they have completed all of the prerequisites.  It is important that they take at least two 400 level ECE courses prior to their final year.  Completion of two 400 level ECE courses is required prior to beginning the one year senior design sequence.
