Numbers and Dates

 

In general, ordinal numbers should be spelled out; e.g. twelfth, rather than 12th. This also applies to dates; e.g. the twelfth century. When such phrases modify nouns, there is a hyphen between the number and century; e.g. twelfth-century literature.
