Study Guide for Quiz 2
The quiz will cover the material we studied after the midterm, including early modern history/culture, Renaissance lyric poetry, and Doctor Faustus. The format will consist
of multiple choice, fill-in-the blank, and short answer questions.
You do not need a blue book. The quiz will last for 30 minutes. Do not worry about the number of questions, as it will only distract you from learning the material. Here are some
things for which you will be expected to display
knowledge.
- Dates
of important periods in literary and linguistic
history (particularly the material we covered
in the first two classes of the semester). For events, knowing the approximate date (within 25 years) is good enough.
- Dates
of important historical events which affect
literary history. For events, knowing the approximate date (within 25 years) is good enough.
- The
titles of the texts we have studied and the
names of their authors. Note that sonnets that form part of sequences (such as Shakespeare's) are known by their numbers. You only need to know the numbers of the sonnets we examined closely in class.
- The
approximate dates when the texts we have
studied were written/composed.
- The
technical terminology for analysing poetic structure and the techniques of using this terminology to interpret poems.
- The subject matter, themes, plot and names of characters in Doctor Faustus.
- Be able to recognise the significance of important passages of poetry and Doctor Faustus which we examined in class.
- The
cultural concepts relevant to understanding
the literature of the Renaissance/Early Modern period.
- The
correct spellings of all words you submit
for me to grade. (The public expects university graduates to be able to spell. The least I can do is grade on this basis.)
Important: The criteria in number 9 (spelling) will be given more weight in this quiz.
