Welcome to the home page of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle Poems Project. This is intended to be an evolving project, to be developed in small sections, with its goals expanding as new ideas and opportunities arise. The current goals of the project are threefold:

1. To create a resource for the study and teaching of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle poems. A number of recent studies have shown that these poems are of great interest, but their non-canonical status (except, perhaps, for The Battle of Brunanburh) means that students have limited exposure to them. The creation of an online edition containing texts, bibliography, manuscript images, and the like will generate questions about the poems’ verse structure, manuscript context, literary characteristics, social functions, and significance in the transmission and survival of English poetry after the Conquest. It is hoped that these questions will spur future scholarship about these issues.
2. To create an experiment in electronic editing which will allow me and my students to examine the issues that arise from the study of Old English texts in the digital age.
3. To provide talented students from CSUN (and elsewhere) the opportunity to gain further knowledge of Old English and electronic textual studies by participating in a long-term project.
