The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) of California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is a student organization within the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Our success as an organization comes from the involvement of our members, faculty advisors, and supporters. Since the establishment of the organization in 1976, our mission was and still is to recruit, retain and, successfully graduate Hispanics in the fields of Engineering and Computer Science. SHPE-CSUN grew out of the MESA Engineering Program (MEP), which serves the minority population at the university. We have continually sought to increase membership and the variety of programs that we offer. These programs include cultural, social, and educational development in the fields of engineering and computer science.
Throughout its 30-year history, not only has SHPE-CSUN made a tremendous impact at the university, but it has grown to become an admired and respected organization within the San Fernando Valley. SHPE has been recognized by Senator Allen Robbins, Councilwoman Gloria Molina, Mayor Tom Bradley, Dr. Fred Starche; CSUN Associate Vice President for Student Programs, Margarita Colmenares; former SHPE National President, and Dr. Alfonso (Rick) Ratcliffe; Dean of Emeritus-College of Engineering and Computer Science.
Our members are seen as role models and are continually sought after for presentations relating to college education, parent involvement, financial assistance, and information regarding CSUN’s pre-college programs.
Our organization was built on the idea to build aspirations, establish goals, and achieve dreams in today’s fast advancing world. Today, that mission has stayed strong through its corporate sponsors, advisors, and members
