First Time Student to CSUN

To help you prepare for your child's transition to campus, we've compiled a list of requirements and recommendations to consider before arriving on campus.

Help you child learn about your personal and family health history including serious illnesses, surgeries, and injuries. Obtain copies of medical and dental records. Note any allergies and related treatments. Include a list of all medicines, supplements and herbs. Students can transfer current prescriptions to the Klotz Student Health Center. Note when the prescription is scheduled to run out or expire, so that an appointment can be made with a health care provider at Klotz before prescriptions run out.

Obtain copies of immunization records. Be sure you have complied with the University immunization requirements (link to Immunizations on healthcare services page). We suggest your child brings a first aid kit to keep in the car or dorm. Include:

  • Over-the-counter medicines (OTC) commonly used
  • Thermometer
  • An assortment of band aids
  • Gauze
  • Tape
  • Ace bandage
  • Ice pack
  • Heating pad
  • Other health related items for comfort

What Every Parent Needs to Know

Medical Emergency

If you have a medical emergency, please call 911 from any campus phone (24 hours/day). Campus police will answer the call and dispatch officers and/or paramedics as necessary. An emergency is any problem that may require immediate medical attention. It takes priority over less urgent medical complaints. Head injuries, difficulty breathing, chest pain, heavily bleeding wounds, repeated vomiting, extreme pain, or feeling faint are just a few examples of emergencies.

During regular Klotz Student Health Center business hours, students who walk in with an emergency should contact any staff member for immediate attention. If the Klotz Student Health Center clinician decides the problem requires more extensive care than we can provide, students will be treated at the nearest hospital. We encourage all students to carry some type of health insurance in case such an emergency arises.

After Hours Care

When the Klotz Student Health Center is closed (either after-hours, weekends or University holidays), medical care is available at local urgent-care centers or hospitals. Please note: financial responsibility rests with the student. Some local recommendations include:
