NSERC/SSHRC Master’s Scholarships in Science Policy

Support for research in the social sciences and humanities. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada living in Canada at time of application; must have completed a master's degree or at least one year of doctoral study at the time of award; must be pursuing full-time studies leading to a Ph.D. Fellowship award is approximately $14,400 per year and may be held up to a period of four years. They are tenable from 6 to 24 months and may be renewable, subject to satisfactory progress. Awards of less than 12 months are prorated and are only for applicants nearing degree completion.

Support for undertaking science policy studies at the master's level to address science policy issues studies providing a basis for decisions influencing the size, institutional structure, resources, effectiveness and creativity of scientific and technological research inb relation to their applications and public consequences. Fields supported include job creation, wealth distribution, environmental protection. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada living in Canada at time of application; must hold a bachelor's degree; must not already be in a master's science policy program. Scholarship award is $14,000 per year and are tenable for 12 months at recognized universities in Canada and abroad; they also include a travel allowance and family allowance if applicable; they may be renewed for an additional 12 months.

The Brookings Institution Foreign Policy Studies Predoctoral Fellowship Program

The Brookings Institution will award a limited number of resident fellowships for policy-oriented doctoral research in foreign policy. The fellowships are designed for doctoral candidates whose dissertation topics and career goals are directly related to public policy issues and thus to the major interests of the Institution. Candidates at any stage of their dissertation research are welcome to apply. Awards will go to scholars whose research will benefit from access to the data, opportunities for interviewing, and consultation with senior staff members afforded by the Brookings Institution and by residence in Washington, DC.

The fellowships carry a stipend of $17,500, payable on a twelve-month basis, for eleven months of research in residence at Brookings and one month of vacation. Under the Tax Reform Act of 1986, most if not all of this stipend will probably be taxable income. The Institution will provide supplementary assistance for copying and other essential research requirements in an amount not to exceed $600, reimbursement for transportation, up to $500 for research-related travel, plus access to a personal computer and the Institution’s main server and networks. The fellows chosen will be expected to pursue their research at the Brookings Institution beginning on or about September 1, 2001 through August 31, 2002.

Eligibility

Candidates must be nominated by a graduate department; sponsorship by individual faculty members cannot substitute for the formal designation of the department. Departments should nominate no more than two persons who should have completed the preliminary examinations for the doctorate. The Brookings Institution: Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Early-Career Fellowship in Economic Studies

The Mellon Fellows Program is designed to offer outstanding economists the opportunity to pursue their own independent research on applied and policy issues in economics over the course of a year at Brookings. The Program provides Fellows with the unique opportunity to pursue their own research, free of other responsibilities, in a policy environment in Washington, DC. Fellows will be in an excellent position to draw on the resources of scholars at Brookings as well as the extended policy community in Washington, DC. Fellows will also be able to participate in workshops and conferences at Brookings.

Fellows will spend up to one year at Brookings, beginning between July and September each year. Brookings will provide salary and partial support for staff and research assistance.

Qualifications

The Mellon Fellows Program is designed to assist economists, in particular junior faculty members who have between two and six years of teaching experience. Applications from other candidates will also be considered, but will be accorded lower priority. Candidates should have a Ph.D. or equivalent and should be committed to undertaking research on interesting, real-world issues in economics and public policy.

Application Procedure

Candidates should submit the following by December 1:

Copies of up to five significant publications and working papers.

The Brookings Institution:

John M. Olin Post-Doctoral Fellow Foreign Policy Studies Program

The John M. Olin Post-Doctoral Fellow would join the Foreign Policy Studies Program for a two-year period, beginning as early as July 2001, but no later than September 4, 2001. The candidate should be a recent recipient of a doctoral degree whose dissertation and research interests are directly related to contemporary U.S. foreign policy and/or post-Cold War international relations.

Specifics:The fellow would be expected to devote considerable time to a policy-relevant project designed to lead to book-length publication; participate in various activities including roundtables and conferences held at Brookings and elsewhere in the area; and, if desired, prepare his or her dissertation for publication. Criteria for selection for this fellowship will include the candidate's scholarly promise, capabilities, and achievements; relevance of the applicant's research to the policy community; and the applicant's potential contribution to the intellectual life of the Brookings Institution.

University of California President’s Post doctoral Fellowship Program

This postdoctoral fellowship program seeks to improve the quality and diversity of university faculty and to encourage outstanding Ph.D holders to pursue academic careers at the University of California. In addition to financial support, the fellowships include mentorship and guidance in areas critical to success in an academic career, such as research, writing, and public speaking. The university will award approximately 20-25 fellowships every year. Each fellowship is for one academic year, beginning July 1, with renewal for a second year pending demonstration of satisfactory progress. Fellowships are awarded for research conducted under faculty and laboratory sponsorship on any one of the university's campuses.

Amount: $28,000

Note: Fellows will receive an annual stipend of $28,000-$29,000, depending on the discipline and experience. The program also offers health benefits and up to $4,000 for research related expenses. Graduate Fellowships: Are available to individual's interested in participating in the education research programs while pursuing graduate study at the Univ. of Hawai.i. US Environmental Protection Agency Graduate Student Fellowship: The mission of the EPA is to provide leadership in the nation's environmental science, research, education, and assessment efforts; make sound regulatory and program decisions; and carry out effective programs and policies to improve and preserve the quality of the national and global environment. Applicants must be citizens of U.S. or its territories or possessions or lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence. Stipends during 1995-1996 wili be $17,000 for 12-month tenures and prorated monthly at a maximum of $1,417 for shorter periods. Stipends are paid directly to the fellow. Tuition support will be up to $12,000 per year, depending upon the policies of the fellowship institution, paid directly to the institution. US Institute of Peace: Jennings Randolph Program for International Peace

The Institute funds projects related to post-conflict reconstruction and reconciliation, peace settlements, ethnic or regional conflict, peace- keeping and peace operations, democratization and the rule of law, cross-cultural negotiations, Program for and U.S. foreign policy in the 21st century, among other topics.

Senior Fellowship Program: The United States Institute of Peace invites applications for the 2002-2003 Senior Fellowship competition in the Jennings Randolph Program for International Peace. Fellowships are awarded annually to scholars and practitioners from a variety of professions, including college and university faculty, journalists, diplomats, writers, educators, military officers, international negotiators and lawyers. The Institute funds projects related to preventive diplomacy, ethnic and regional conflicts, peacekeeping and peace operations, peace settlements, post-conflict reconstruction and reconciliation, democratization and the rule of law, cross-cultural negotiations, U.S. foreign policy in the 21st century, and related topics. Fellows reside at the Institute for a period of up to ten months to conduct research on their projects, consult with staff, and contribute to the ongoing work of the Institute. Projects which demonstrate relevance to current policy debates will be highly competitive. The fellowship award includes a stipend, an office with computer and voicemail, and a part-time research assistant. The competition is open to citizens of all nations. Peace Scholar Dissertation Fellowships: The United States Institute of Peace invites applications for the 2002-2003 Peace Scholar dissertation fellowship competition of the Jennings Randolph Program for International Peace. The Peace Scholar program supports doctoral dissertations that explore the sources and nature of international conflict, and strategies to prevent or end conflict and to sustain peace. Dissertations from a broad range of disciplines and interdisciplinary fields are eligible. Peace Scholars work at their universities or appropriate field research sites. Priority will be given to projects that contribute knowledge relevant to the formulation of policy on international peace and conflict issues. Citizens of all countries are eligible, but must be enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States. Applicants must have completed all requirements for the degree except the dissertation by the commencement of the award (September 1, 2002). The dissertation fellowship award is $17,000 for one year and may be used to support writing or field research. All application materials must be received in their offices by November 1, 2001.

Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program: Support for graduate studies leading to a higher degree (masters)in a development-related social science in the fields of economic and social development. Applicants must be nationals of a World Bank member country, under 40 years old, have at least a Bachelor's degree in a development-related field, and have at least two years professional experience in the their field; they must also show application documentation for a postgraduate degree to two distinguished universities and proof of admission to at least one of them.
