Introduction

Statement of why study of this topic is important.

Several authors have asserted that before teachers can effectively select the processes and strategies for promoting a learner-centered (developmentally appropriate) classroom, it is important that they understand the nature of primary-aged children’s social and emotional development (Seefeldt, 1999, Elkind, Erikson, 1960, Bowman, 1999).  It can be argued that they must also understand the moral reasoning of children at this stage.  Piaget, Kohlberg and Gilligan have asserted various viewpoints on the development of moral reasoning of children that when understood, can assist teachers in successfully creating learner-centered classrooms.
