Creating WebQuests With Templates

Owing to the overabundance of information available online, WebQuest creation, like the creation of digital archives, can be a daunting task at first. Teachers are encouraged to choose aspects of a topic that are debatable, or that at least offer a couple different perspectives. Current events, controversial social and environmental topics work well, as well as anything that requires evaluation of interpretations.

Teachers should also consider the length of the WebQuest, and how long they wish students to spend on their task. A short-term WebQuest is generally designed to be completed in one to three class periods. The goal is knowledge acquisition and integration. Long term WebQuests can be designed to last as long as several weeks, and learners are essentially challenged to extend and refine the knowledge they find online and in the real world. They are required to analyze the information, transform it in some way, and demonstrate an understanding by applying that information or creating something that others can respond to, online or offline.

There are two means of creating WebQuests: either through a template or from scratch. Template sites for the creation of WebQuests are beginning to abound on the Internet, making the potential for WebQuest creation more of a reality, even for novice computer users.
