VFTs as Teaching Tools

Creating VFTs

Creating Virtual Filedtrips

Developing a Virtual Fieldtrip can be a daunting task. It can be accomplished in two basic ways. First of all, you can develop a problem based lesson and provide a link to a museum which students would use to find the answers to the problem. The second method is to take pictures and gather documents on a location, then publish those sources on a website for students to peruse.

As with WebQuests, VFTs can be created either through the use of an online template or from scratch. Template sites include:

Tramline
Virtual Fieldtrips Toolkit

Keep in mind, the creation of Virtual Fieldtrips would also present a great project opportunity for students in your classes. They could be responsible for taking picture, gathering documents, and creating a Virtual Fieldtrip for other students to use from across the nation.

Portfolio Activity #5B– Creating a VFT
After exploring Virtual Fieldtrips and VFT template sites, write a critique on the use of Virtual Fieldtrips in secondary education and merits of using VFTs as a tool in your classroom.

If at all possible, actually plan out a lesson which includes the use of a VFT and present it to your students. Add in the results of that lesson to your critique.
