Project Based Learning

Project Based Learning (also known as PBL) is a model for classroom learning which assumes that students learn best when they are constructing something. The idea is to move the emphasis away from teacher-centered lessons (especially lectures) to activities which are student-centered and integrate real world issues and practical application of the knowledge students are acquiring.

This approach naturally fits well with social studies education, which encourages students to think broadly and critically about facts and information and the ways in which they apply to the “big picture.” It also addresses a major problem in social studies education: students find our subject to be boring. (Check out this article for more information). PBL is one way that educators are attempting to correct this misconception of social studies education.
