Since the Internet contains
so many valuable tools, teachers need to beinstructed on how to find,
and appropriatly use, the Internet to their
advantage. The Reading Assignment below, and your first Portfolio Activity
is designed to help you do just that.
Reading
Assignment # 2 - Evaluating Online Resources
Read the article by Gibson and
post a comment about the article (good, bad, is this important…) on the
class discussion board.
Portfolio
Activity #1 - Teacher Resource Bookmarks
This
assignment asks you to find ways of making your job as a social studies
teacher
easier. Each of the categories below lists something for you to search
for on the Internet. You need to find several examples of these resources,
and post them on the Internet Resources webpage of your Digital Portfolio.
For each one, write a brief description (1-2 sentences) describing what
the site/page contains and how it is useful. More specific directions are
given for each category.
Social
Studies Content Standards
Find the CA State Content Standards for Social Studies along with the
National Standards of Content for Social Studies online, for the classes
which you teach. Post links to the standards for the grade levels that
you teach in social studies.
Professional Associations
Find at least two professional associations for social studies. Add
links to them on the webpage of Internet Resources you are creating,
along with a brief description of what the association is, its purpose,
and the professional journals it publishes.

Next find two professional associations which specifically promote
the use of technology in secondary education. Add links to them on the
webpage of Internet Resources you are creating, along with a brief description

Finding Lesson Plans
Use the Internet to find curriculum warehouses of lesson plans for
social studies teachers. Find at least three sites which contain multiple
lesson plans. Write a brief critique on them and post it to the class
discussion board.
From the resources that you and your colleagues gather, create links
to five lesson plan sites on your Internet Resources page, along with
a brief description on the types of lesson plans that can be found on
each site.

Finding Classroom Activities
Use the Internet to find activities and/or websites for creating activities,
which you can use to supplement your curriculum and make your lessons
more enjoyable. Create links to three sites on your wepage of Internet
Resources which contain worksheets, puzles or other activities that
you could use in
your classes.

Finding Journal Articles Online
Use the resources below to find journal articles from reputable professional
associations, which you can use to supplement the textbook in your
social studies classes. Post links to at least three databases of Professional
Journals which you and other teachers can access. Breifly describe each
one, the types of articles that can be found within it, and what classes
you could use these articles in.
Informational Websites
Develop a set of web bookmarks (at least five links) for sites that
are useful to you in the teaching your specialization within social
studies. Paste your bookmarks as active links on the class discussion
board, and include a brief description of the resource.
On the Internet Resource
web page of your Digital Portfolio include links to seven or eight
sites which you and other class members found, along
with a brief description of each site.
Finding PowerPoint Presentations
Use the advanced search features of a Boolean search engine, such as
Google or Yahoo, to find PowerPoint presentations related to subject
that you teach.
Post links to five PowerPoint presentations on the Internet Resource
web page of your Digital Portfolio
Evaluating Online Resources
In
your Digital Portfolio, on the Internet Resources web page, create
a lesson
for
your students
on how to distinguish credible sources on
the Internet, with guidelines for conducting searches on the Internet.
