The second group
of games which can be used effectively within social studies classes
are those created on the Internet. These games can take place in a variety
of online environments, from chat room style gaming, to games based on
databases (such as stock market simulations) and more modern Flash games.
The vast majorities of them, however, are simulation based and give the
student a greater degree of autonomy over the interaction they engage
in. Like most games, Internet based games have been shown to can be used
to improve student acquisition of knowledge and to connect learning to
prior knowledge, however, because of the environment they are presented
in, Internet based games also encourage risk-taking, strategy formulation,
interpersonal cooperation, peer tutoring, and utilization of structure.
Portfolio
Activity #6A -
Finding Internet Games
Use the Internet to find at least three Internet based games or simulations
which you could use in a social studies class.
Post the links to these games, along with a brief explaination of the game,
on the class discussion board.
After everyone has posted their links, review the games your class came
up with, and post links to at least five games, which you think would be
especially useful in your classes, on the Video Games web page in your
digital portfolio.
