Reading Assignments

• Java Swing chapter reading:
  The on-line Swing Tutorials are a good alternative or secondary reading source. This is also available in printed form (see reference list below -- if you decide to buy this book buy it used. The textbook is complex with respect to events and properties (reference). Read quickly and look at class and text examples. Concentrate on material similar to lectures.

  • Hello Swing example file has comments explaining javadoc usage.
    • Source file HelloSwing.java updated 9/8/05
    • Directory for javadoc generated html documentation files.
    • The included batch file to run the program is HelloSwing.bat you should save this file in the directory of your HelloSwing.class file, if you compile this example.
    • Look at a similar NetBeans 4.1 version of the file for comparison HelloSwing .
  • How to use a ComponentAdapter to control the size of a JFrame. Also shows how to use MatteBorder for insets in a container: ComponentResize example

  • List Demo (alternate version of Sun's tutorial trail example) with:

  • Threads and Swing ThreadDemoSwing.java. This example uses older style thread methods that are not recommended by Sun/Java. The program can hang. Its initial function was to demo thread activity to cs322. Its use here is layout managers and timer demo as well as Thread information calls. This demo was written for CS322.

  • Hello 585 files: dialog, custom dialog, mouse, fonts, colors, tooltips, shortcuts. These files were generated with Visual Studio . NET designer tool and then edited for printing.
