The Digital Rights War This article once again attempts to answer the question of how much freedom do we have to reproduce information from the internet. Yes, the internet has a vast amount of information which is free to view but that it can not be reproduced and sold for a profit. No one is challenging the right to reproduce any amount of information for profit the real question is: How much information can it be view for free? One of the examples in the articles states how CD's could be made so that they will not play after a fixed amount of times. One of the problems is that it is very difficult to control the software on the market that would limit the usage of specific CD's. When the internet first was created it was suppose to be free to everyone but as we all know someone has to make profit and in this case the winner was Microsoft Inc. The internet has been evolving much faster than many had predicted and currently their is so much informatin on it that it is overwhelming. Currently companies have been using the internet for promotional usage and to sell their products. Only a hand full of companies charge a fee to anyone who wishes to view their product or use their services. That is changing very quickly: companies have realized that they have the public hooked on their Monitors and that now it is time to take advantage and make a profit which is no different than television commercials. The federal government has not come to an agreement whether to keep all the information on the internet free but what it is not too difficult to speculate is that it is only a matter of time. Businesses by the nature of their idealogies can not and will not provide services or borrow their product without a profit. They too must make a profit if they plan to stay in business and compete on the market. The article makes numerous reference to the copyrights of books, tapes, CD's, etc. which in my opinion are no different than information provided on the internet. Once again the decision is not difficult and we should not be surprised because it is only a matter of time before we are charged if we wish to view certain webpages on the internet.
