Cal State Northridge has won 17 conference team championships,
including 14 by women’s programs, since joining the NCAA Division I in
1990-1991. During that period, CSUN teams
competed in two NCAA Division
I championship title games: the men’s volleyball team in 1993 against
UCLA, and in 1994 the women’s softball team against Arizona.
Speaking of women’s softball, the team has been the most successful
of Cal State Northridge’s 20 varsity teams. The softball team has won
13 conference championships in 16 seasons, and has qualified for NCAA
Division I postseason regionals in nine consecutive seasons between 1992
and 2000, including a 1994 trip to the Women’s College World Series.
The women’s basketball team has made the most significant rebound
of all the university’s varsity sports in terms of performance. After struggling
during its initial years in NCAA Division I competition, women’s basketball
turned around to produce back-to-back winning seasons, including a 21-8
record in 1998-99, winning the Big Sky Conference title and earning the
university its first-ever NCAA women’s tournament berth.
