For your Major Art Museum Paper, I would like you to visit the CSUN Art Gallery on campus or an art museum in the Los Angeles area and find ONE piece of artwork that catches your attention. You may choose a painting, sculpture, photograph, or other visual media. Include the piece's title, artist, date, and museum location.
NOTE: You must visit a museum or gallery in person. Analyses from Internet sources will not be accepted. Please analyze your piece by discussing ALL of the following elements:
1. Give a thorough and detailed description of the piece.
2. Define the purpose of objects/figures.
3. Describe the relative size and placement of objects/figures.
4. Describe the use of color, and explain how those colors create mood/tone.
5. Describe the use of texture (if any).
6. Explain any symbols (people, objects, colors, placement can be symbolic).
7. Consider the characteristics that can be attributed to the time period of your piece.
8. Is your piece Apollonian or Dionysian?
9. Does your piece convey a social or political message?
10. Briefly describe your own reaction to the piece. Has this piece altered your own feelings or perceptions about art and/or life?
This paper should be written in your own words. Please do not copy historical or analytical information from other sources (this includes what is posted in your art gallery/museum).
The Art Paper must be a minimum of 1000 words (4 pages) in length. NOTE: ALL Humanities 101OL students must EMAIL a paper to the Instructor!!! Please paste your analysis into the body of the email!!!
Tuesday/Thursday in-person Humanities 101 students must type and double-space their papers!!!
This assignment constitutes 20% of your final grade. English does count so check your grammar, spelling and punctuation. Good luck!
