  COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Advanced and complex problem solving consistent with those of graphic designers in the field. Emphasis on project of substantive scope, integration of skills and presentation. Students should have developed a professional resume and portfolio by the end of this series.


  Graphic design Content:

Projects demand creative solutions to typical problems faced by the graphic designer.
Students will experiences four important elements to graphic design:

1. conceptual development
2. experimentation
3. design process
4. social / humanistic relationships

5. Professional presentation of all graphic materials.
6. Portfolio product
7. Image making (use of photography)

  Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Learning Outcome 1: Understand and Apply Knowledge Related to Graphic Design and Visual Communication.

1. Develop professional skills in the process of design from conceptual development to completion of final product.
2 . Conduct research on a design problem and apply research to conceptual development.
3. Produce professional presentations of design concepts and ideas.
4. Be able to demonstrate the ability to critique others and their own work.
5. Demonstrate the ability to produce a project proposal, a time sheet, studio production schedule, and other legal forms graphic designers need in business.

 

ASSIGNMENTS:


 
design studio projects

There are 2 types of studio activities: In-class exercises and Main design projects. These activities are considered in class and out of class assignments and must be handed in for course credit as appointed in the grade section of this syllabus. Some in-class days may be lab works days, however, plan to spend at least 5 hours per week outside of class time in order to complete these assignments. Students are required to attend all critiques for each
assignment.

In-class exercises:
These exercises are vehicles for learning about the formal elements of design. Exercises are graded. These assignments are given to provide the students with exposure to the four main elements to visual communication: 1. conceptual development; 2. experimentation; 3. design process; 4. social / humanistic elements of design.

Main design projects
These projects are to be done outside of class. The main design projects are given as a way for the student to explore and practice visual communication. Students are encouraged to push the boundaries of design through innovation and conceptual development. The main studio projects are evaluated according to design, presentation, innovation, and skills. (See assignment sheets for further details on evaluation criteria)

EXAMS:

Final Exam is Project 5:Portfolio.
Due on last day of class to be presented to the class. (this will be like an interview/Portfolio review, so dress in business casual.

 
reading assignments
The reading assignments are in the required textbook and in the course packet. The professor will announce each reading. Students are expected to read and discuss articles.
In-class discussions of these readings are part of your grade.

  Graphic Materials:

• You will need to purchase graphic tools, for mounting, cutting and pasting your assignments.

• You will also need access to a camera. (35mm, APS, or digital.)

• You will also need to pay for the cost of printing. (So if this is a problem you may want to reconsider taking this course or questioning your interests in majoring in art with a graphic design concentration.)


  Computer Input/ Output equipment:

Assignments will be completed on the computer.

Zip disks
Please buy 2 zips disks (one for backup, one for everyday use).
Professor will collect Zip disks.

So you must have your work backed up on the other disk. Professor is not responsible if the disk gets damaged and student does not have a back up. It is your responsibility to back up all your files. Professor will not except the excuse "My disk went bad" or "My disk was stolen." You still need to do the projects assigned. * Please purchase a Macintosh disk unless you are using a PC at home —PC disks have known to cause problems in the Macintosh computers.

(Home or school) Computer/Scanner /Color printer.
Printed out in black and white and color. Therefore please factor in the cost of output into your materials list.


  lab-time

Due to the credit hours, students are required to come in for computer lab-time outside of class. Lab-time is not regulated, but it is up to the student to get as much experience using the computer. Plan to spend at least 9 hours per week outside class on course work. If you are not comfortable with the computer than you may have to spend more time.

  class participation

Class participation means
you participate during every class discussion. Participation means you must speak and express your opinion and views about the issues addressed. You are expected to give respect to the professor and the students when participating.

You will be evaluated on this aspect of the course as follows:

[8] Participates most of the time.
[4] Participates sometimes.
[0] Never participates.

  attendance

Attendance is not an option it is a requirement. Students are required to attend all classes especially project critiques. This includes final critique. If you are absent because you are sick or have an emergency, a doctors note or some proof of emergence must be provided. 1 excused absence is permitted. After your 1 excused, for every absent there after there will be deducted 4 points from your final grade. Lateness is discouraged. Every late = half of unexcused absence (2 pts). (Students have known to get a very low grade because they come late or are absent frequently.)

For example: if your final grade is a 100 [A] because you have handed in all assignments on time and according to criteria, but you have 3 unexcused absences (after your excused one), then you will be deducted 12 points from that grade. This means you will have an 88 [B+] Or if you earned a 90 [B+] grade point with 3 absences then you would have a 78 [C+].

If a students has any of the following items, they will receive an incomplete on the assignments and will be asked to re-do. (This means even if money has been spent on printing and mounting.)

Avoid the following at all cost:
1. Crooked lines or paper fraying.
2. Pixilated images or graphics
3. Glue residue or dirt marks
4. Uneven folding.
5. Misspelling or grammar problems
6. Any font not approved by professor

DO NOT USE!
None of the following fonts can be used.
Fonts w/ city names -Chicago, Monaco, New York, Geneva
Helvetica /Arial or equivalent
Chancery
Bauhaus
Comic Sans
Sand
Times
Palatino
Peignot
Courier (unless the concept requires typewriter style)
Script fonts must be approved before using.
