Introduction to the first assignment:

Movie Posters

 

  • Must purchase required books
  • For next class:
    — Must bring in your graphic design portfolio.
    (If you do not have one, bring in your graphic design work so far.)

    — Rent all of the Films and watch them!
    (Bring film to class if this is the only time to watch them).

 

  • Due Next Monday
    — Read Chapter 1 of "Designing Brand Experiences" and write a synopsis on the chapter. (Make sure you include bullet points under the synopsis. )
    —Have 20 thumbnail sketches on a movie poster design
    • Must be retraced in black marker or dark pencil.

    • Must be at least the size of the thumbnail sheet or larger. (not smaller)



 

 

Wed (2-01)

 

 

 

 

Professor will:

  • Look at Portfolios

 

In class Students will:

 

  • Go through WorkSheet to determine concepts for movie posters
  • Look at the images on the DVDs.
  • Based on the concepts, locate images from other sources to use in your posters.
  • Begin 20 Thumbnail sketches (you can also use tracing paper).

 

 

For next class:

— Read Chapter 1 of "Designing Brand Experiences" and write a synopsis on the chapter. (Make sure you include bullet points under the synopsis. )

—Have 20 thumbnail sketches on movie poster about one movie

  • Must be retraced in black marker or dark pencil.

  • Must be at least the size of the thumbnail sheet or larger. (not smaller)



WK2:

  • Writing assignment (synopsis)on Chapter 1 of "Designing Brand Experiences"

Group Critiques of thumbnail sketches

 

Professor will:

  • Look at Portfolios

 

—Take the 5 best thumbnails. Create 15 more sketches based on those 5 choosen and 5 new ideas.

**Have some sketches that are character (actor based) and some sketches that are conceptual based.

—Purchase a sketchbook or box or folder to store all your collected images and designs for your "Self Branding Book"

—Start on your exercise 1 for
the "Self Branding book"

For next Mon:

— Read Chapter 2: "Branding Process" and write a synopsis on the chapter. (Make sure you include bullet points under the synopsis. )

Wed (2-14)

 

Professor will:

  • Work with students in Photoshop

 

 

Students' work on

  • Work on Number Collage-exercise 1 for the "Self Branding book"
  • Work on Movie Posters in Photoshop
  • Start to gather material and elements for your open project (as discussed by you and the professor)

 

Due next class

Movie Poster: Continue working on layouts in Photoshop. Have all your version of your file at 72ppi to show the class on Monday. (Professor will show the work and talk about the techniques.)

Number collage: Have 4 varriations of your collage on the computer.

—Begin to work on Exercise 2 : This is documenting your creative environement. So read this section over and get out your digital camera and start working on this.

WK4: Mon (2-19)

Professor will:

  • Movie Posters: Show work on overhead projector
  • Number Collage: Show on overhead projector.

Movie Poster: Print out in color at least one of Movie Poster Layouts. (8.5 x 11). (Make sure it is a good color print.)

Altered book: Find materials and a book to use for your atered book project.

 

 

WK5: Mon (2-26)

Designing a self promotional/ self Branding book

  • Brand Book: Talk to each studnet about the direction of the book, size, binding and stylistic features of the book.

  • Movie Posters: talk to each student about your posters

Moodbook : Start working on your self Promotional/ branding book, by comming up with a theme or direction of your brand (a graphic designer). Start gathering the graphic design materials that show the style and look and feel of the book.

 

 

Wed (3-07)

 

Professor will:

  • Talk to students about their poster designs
  • talk to students about the logos

Book design: 25 Thumbnail Sketches and pagination for the branding book. (Indicate the size, orientation, binding and any other special features of the book through thumbnail sketches).

WK7: Mon (3-12)

Due Monday:

5 finished looking spreads for the brand book: Decide on the typeface you will use what will be the content and what you will write about yourself.

Print out pages for the brand book: Work in indesign and layout your pages. Have all you ideas in layout form on the computer. This includes blank pages. (Or pages that you will put works in later.) Have page numbers and description of what goes where.

Movie Posters: Print out 11 x 17 mounted on foam core. Make sure you ahve all the billing information in your poster.

(Send me low res PDf or .ps file to look out before you print)

Look at promo/brand book:

5 finished looking spreads for the brand book: typeface, content and what you will write about yourself.

Movie Poster (second one): Print out 11 x 17 mounted on foam core. Make sure you have all the billing information in your poster.

—— 20 pages finished with images (10 spreads) for the brand book: Have printed outs Black and white thumbnails or small spreads.

—— Open Project: Write up in 1 paragraph, (atleast 5 sentences) a proposal about hwat you will do for you open project. Provide some examples or sketches that show the direction you will be going for your open project.

WK9: Mon (3-26)

 

Students will put up:

  • Movie Poster 2
  • 20 pages of branding book.

 

Professor will:

  • talk about Movie Poster 1 and the changes.
  • Look at branding book comps

Due Final Poster:

  • Must be flawless and changes must be made by this day inorder for your poster to be submitted.
  • Must print out 2 copies

  • Only A work will be submitted.
  • All the forms must be filled out

I need to submit to the Key Art Awards Competition.

Due Next class:

— color comp of self Branding book. (actual size mock up) Bind it the way you will bind it.

(we will all look at the books as a class and give suggestions. So be ready to answer questions and present your booklet)

WK11: Mon (4-16)

 

As a class we will:

  • Look at your branding book
  • What does it say about who you are?
  • Does it have a theme or look to it?
  • Does this represent who you are? How and why?
  • How will it be bound?
  • Does it give a biography or profile of who you are?
  • Does it show some of your work?
  • Does it show your process?

— Make changes to your branding book.

—You will need to have your portfolio for next monday, (April 23) so make sure it is put together in the case and printed.

  • If you are sending this out to Lulu.com, then you will still need to make a version for me. (as good as the real thing). My version can be smaller.
  • Those that are making the book by hand, need to have it bound and ready to show the class.

Show professor & Class

Sketches for last and final project.

Due Next class:

1. Branding book: printed in color, presented in a professional manner, and professional bound. (No plastic spiral binds). Use Saddle stitch, perfect binding, or metal wire binding. (grade will based on content and presentation as well as design).

2. Portfolio: Presented to the class in a professional manner. This means in a professional case.  Pages should be designed and structured in a cohesive order. (grade will be based on presentation, design of book and content chosen for the book.)

Note: Please come dress for an interview.  I will be the reviewer and you will present you book to me.

For above: You must have all of the following or you will receive an F on each project.

3. CD:

  • Submit a CD of your branding book as a pdf
  • Key Art Poster as a PDF
  • your entire portfolio as a medium resolution pdf.

4. Open Project: You must have a print out of your initial stages (comps) for your open project.  Some people are doing logos, some are creating editorials, and others are working on a catalog or style guide. You must come to class with your initial comp ideas.

If you skip the class on Monday I will fail you for the whole entire course.  

If you come to class without numbers 1 and 2 above, I will fail you for the projects you do not have (No credit).

If you do not come with initial comps for your open project I will take a whole grade down on your project.

AIGA Portfolio Review: Saturday April 28th 9am at USC.

(Remember you are required to show your portfolio at a portfolio review. You can join AIGA at the door. Student Mmebership is $85.00.)
