2. Due Monday:

a) Research graphic/ illustrative gig posters.

  • Look at rock posters and gather ones the ones you like.
  • Answer the these questions to yourself to determine what a rock poster looks like (See samples on the side for reference):

    • What is the title of the show?
    • What is the title of the band?
    • What is the focal point? (A person, animal, object?)
    • Is the band title part of the illustration? Or is it an event of many bands? Is it the title of the tour, or is it the title of the album.

Do Not just collect any posters. Only collect the ones that have a specific style you will want your poster to be.

  • Place several examples of posters in your DropBox folder called "Project 1-Research." (These examples should show the art director the style, look or direction you are trying to accomplish.)

Rock/Gig Poster sketches: In sketchbook or tracing paper make thumbnail sketches for your rock posters
Create a total of 40 thumbnail sketches
by hand.
(all sketches must be Xeroxed copies.)

Sketches should be the same orientation as the poster size. (So indicate what the poster size maybe.) You can do these at any size as long as they are detailed.

(Note: The smaller sizes of sketches work better, because you do not have to spend so much time on them. That is why they call them, Thumbnail Sketches. (Small sketches- clear and detailed).

You can use pencil to make the sketches, but they must be enhanced with a black felt-tip pen.

I should be able to look at the sketches and understand what they are without you explaining.

DETAIL DETAIL DETAIL.You can print out images from the computer as reference or use tracing paper and trace objects, but you must produce thumbnail sketches by hand.

  • refer to your research and look at the posters you have collected.
  • Collected images and resources to use for tracing.
  • Remember the questions you asked from the last homework assignment.
  • Sketch out your ideas for the poster.

You must come to class with a Xeroxed copy of your sketches. They should be able to see from 5 feet away, so make sure the lines are strong and the details are clear.

1. Go through online tutorials listed above:

You will eventually have to do some of these, but skim through them for now to get an idea of what is possible.

2. Go through the
In Class Practice #3.
See how far you can take this.

Homework: For Wed. Feb. 15

  1. Record Label names- make up your own name. Do not use an existing label:
If professor does not get to speak to you on wed. in class, please email professor by 7pm Wed. evening. Send to this email -(roadworkdesign@sbcglobal.net)

10 different names of your record label.

      • Have all 10, but tell me which 4 are your favorites.

    These names should be descriptive.

    • A descriptive name uses words that describe an object. It is harder to come up with a logo if the name is obscure. So think of image based words. The name you choose should be followed by one of the these words: Records, Recordings, Productions, Music, Entertainment, or Media
    • You can look at these samples to get an idea of Record Company Logos.
      ( Pictorial Symbols | Lettermark | Wordmark | Abstract symbol )

2. Practice #11: For this practice you will need to do some technical research.

Find 2 tricks or tips about Photoshop (Somewhere online) it should relate to compositing or retouching.
It should relate to something you are trying to accomplish in your movie poster layout.

Most people will choose the first link in a google search.
So go through a couple of links to find the one that works best for you.
Make sure it is not any of the ones listed below.

Find a site that shows the steps to:

  • 1) Something new, you did not know about, but you learned.
  • 2) Something cool and interesting.

These can be videos or step by steps.

Send your links to those sites to professor on Sunday evening, via email, by 5pm, so she can post them online.
