Overview of Photoshop

Demo #1: Class exercise on compositing.

Movie Assignments are given out to students

Homework:

1. Practice what you have learned, based on the demo

Work further on baby and building composite (From Demo in class). Try to clone out the people at the bottom.

2. Practice #1: Practice what you have learned, based on the demo

Find 3 images to composite together. 
The idea is to make the live animal or person look like they belong in the space.  It can be realistic or surrealistic.

No visible feathering of images.
No montages of image.

  • A background sky
  • A main scenery (like a forest, street, a building or automobile)
  • A live subject (animal, fish, insect, or person)

3. Read the handout on resolution and have questions for me for class on Thursday. (I switched it so I can talk with all the students on a one on one basis for Tuesday.)

4. Bring a blank CD and DVD for Teacher

5. Research your movie that was assigned:

  • Go watch your movie if it is out in the theaters or rent the movie if it is available.
  • Take notes. What do you see. What objects in the movie stand out. Is there something in the movie you can use as a symbol.
  • Jot down words, phrases, and scenes that stand out.
  • Determine the unique parts of the film. What scenes stand out.
  • Think about what part of the movie moves you. (Put those notes in a notebook or typed out in a file.)
  • Gather as many imaegs you can about the movie.
  • Research other movie posters. Look at movie posters that are in the same genre, comedy, drama, action, etc.

Demo #2: Eyes

Talk about students' work

Homework:

1. Practice #2: Work on the eyes like the demo today.

Find an image (high res) of a person with clear eyes.

Make 2 different versions of the image with the eyes in a different direction.
Keep the orginal so we can see the difference.

2. Work on sketches of your movie Poster 1. Must have at least 15 sketches. No less. No excuses.

I will talk to every student on Tuesday.

Talk about resolution

Professor will go around an talk to each student about their sketches.

Homework:

1. Start putting your sketches of Movie Poster 1 into a computer comp. Have 3 rough ideas on the computer.

Make sure you start with an 11 x 17 --200 ppi image and put images in that layout.

2. Look at images for the Movie Poster 2: Key Art Awards.

Demo #3: Selecting Hair and Custom Brushes

Work in class on Movie Poster 1(Names of movies TBA)


Homework:

1. Practice #3: Work on Hair demo and custom brush demo.

Get a picture of a person with hair. Make sure it is a high res file and the hair has a light colored background. (From Demo in class). Create 3 custom brushes that you can use in your Movie poster (From Demo in class). One can be with the hair.

2. Exercise #1: Go through tutorial in Photoshop book.

Cross- processing effect - pg. 116

This exercise will require you to submit 2 files for each technique (total 4 files):

  • Use the images from the website for the book and create what the book explains.
  • Find your own images and go through the same steps the book has explained.

3. Work on 3 computer layouts for Movie Poster #1. This can be done in class as well as at home.

The Practice 3 and Exercise #1 from book is due on tuesday. Not to be done in class.

Demo #4: Making rain and mist (maybe making fire explosions)


Homework:

1. Practice #4: Make rain and mist on your own image.

Get a picture of a a building. Make sure the picture is dark and looks like a rainy day. Apply the rain. Try to make a reflection on the street to mimic the idea of a wet ground. (From Demo in class).

2. Exercise #2: Go through tutorial in Photoshop book.

Adding rays of light - pg. 58
Day to Night - pg. 102

This exercise will require you to submit 2 files for each technique (total 4 files):

  • Use the images from website for the book and create what the book explains.
  • Find your own images and go through the same steps the book has explained.

Week 5:

Tue 2/17

Show the billing and logo placement.

Intro to Illustrator and using illustrator for type.

Homework:

1. Work on the billing and title for the Movie Poster #1

Layout your billing in illustrator. Make sure you use the assigned typeface. Also put your title, actor and slogan in your poster.

2. Continue working on Movie poster #1

Continue to work on the photo compositing and retouching for your poster.

3. Present screen grabs of movie websites that are similar in genra and similar in style that you are interested in.

This is the next project: A key Art Website on the same movie that you are working on.

1. Practice #5: Liquify, smoothing out skin, using the healing brush.

2. Exercise #3: Go through tutorial in Photoshop book.

3. Keep researching entertainment websites

Take screen grabs and ceate a file with a bunch of links.

Professor will meet with Students to talk about their movie poster. This is the time to finalize and refine all the posters.

Professor will look at Movie Poster #1.


Homework:

1. Work on finalizing Movie Poster #1

This will be due next Tue, on the computer.

2. Start creating sketches for your website design

3. Get in all Practice files and Exercise files by this thursday.

After this thursday these assignments will be considered late and you will get points deducted.

Look at what you have so far for your Movie Poster #1.

Talk about issues and things to consider.

Demo #6:

  • Colorizing a car
  • Applying a logo - using the Smart filter and using the warp tool
  • Using textures of smooth round surfaces.

Homework:

1. Must finalize and complete Movie Poster #1.

2. Practice #6: Colorizing a car or smooth object, Applying a logo (all using the Smart filter and using the warp tool). Also making the car look rusted or dirty.

3. Exercise #4: Go through tutorial in Photoshop book.

Adding Tatoos- pg. 138

This exercise will require you to submit 2 files for each technique (total 4 files):

  • Use the images from the book and create what the book explains.

Project #3: Musical artist promotion/ event poster

Part 1: Logo of Record label.
Part 2: Poster for musical performance

Demo #7: practice the pen tool in illustrator.
You must master the pen tool in illustrator.

Homework:

1. Practice #7: Go through each sheet and trace the lines

Make sure you are using the least amount of points possible and you are working with the curves and handles to obtain the best possible line.

2. For the next project: Come up with the following:

1. Name of musical artist (what is the genre)-No pop artists allowed. Must be another genre.

2. Have 5 different names of your record label
- email these names to me so I can help you move along faster.

3. Begin type treatments for names. - email these so I can help you move along faster.

4. Begin sketches for your names

4. Make appointment with professor outside of class to talk about Midterm Review.

Week 8:

Tue 3/10

Lecture on Logo design and the various types of logos.

Look at successful logos and unsuccessful logos.

Homework:

1. Look at graphic design books on logos.

Go to the book store and look at logo books in the graphic design section. Study there shapes, sizes proportionally, colors, and type treatments. Look at the types of symbols and forms these logos take on.

3. Create sketches for logos. -Use the Logo worksheet

At least a total of 30 sketches (3 pages fo the LOGO-WORKSHEET.pdf. These can be for a couple of company names- this will be due on Tuesday March 17th---no exceptions.

4. Research the images you would like to use for your musical artist poster.

Think about the symbols and images that would represent the artist and their music.

Homework:

1. Practice 8: Trace an object

Trace an image and make it an icon:

  • Stylize the object
  • Make the object look like a logo icon by making it fit in an implied shape. (or actual shape)

2. Exercise #5: Read page 7, 8-9, and conduct the exercise on pages 48 - 57 (of the illustrator book)

If you do not have this book yet, then please practice what you have already done and get better at the pen tool.

3. Thumbnail sketches are due on tuesday.

At least a total of 30 sketches (3 pages fo the LOGO-WORKSHEET.pdf. These can be for a couple of company names- this will be due on Tuesday March 17th---no exceptions.

Professor will meet with students.

Please make an appointment outside of class for closer tutoring by professor.

Homework:

1. I will need to see reference images for your Musical Poster.

So make sure you have gathered all the images, shapes, symbols icons and illustrations that you might want to use for your design. You will need to start coming up with a design for your poster soon.

2. Begin to make the logos on the computer. You must have exactly what you have sketched plus varioations of that intial idea.

We will look at Logos on screen in front of class next week.

Thur 3/19

Demo 9: Building your logo in illustrator


Homework:

1. Practice 9: Build the logos that were chosen by instructor in illustrator. Must have something to show on the computer.

You will need to scan your sketches that were chosen and have those in illustrator for reference and tracing.

*** Note***
We will look at your logos on the computer in front of the whole class. So you must make sure you outline your type.

2. Exercise #6: Go through the following pages: pages 62-65, 69, 73, 122-125

You will submit a page or a couple of pages that have the various techniques applied. All the techniques you learned from these reading will help you in your construction of your logo.

3. Due on Tuesday---1 Print out of Movie Poster ---No exceptions

This must be printed 11 x 17, full bleed, mount on white foam core. Do not include a boarder or margin. --No white border---the poster must flush to the edge of the 11 x 17 foam core.

Layout all your logo designs. Put 2-3 logos to a page.

Look at The movie posters.

Look at the digital versions of your logos.

Homework:

1. Work and refine the logos you have based on the critique.

2. Layout all your Logos neatly on pages (5 pages)

You should have your variations of your log on different pages. --(2 on a page -- about 5 pages.)

Look at the Logos on the computer.

Samples of letterheads, business cards and envelopes.
Show how to layout a stationary system in Illustrator.

Talk about composition of your Rock Poster.

Homework: -No excercises

1. Please email professor: If you do not have a final logo choice, please email professor to get an approval of which logo is the final logo.

2. Work on a stationary set. (Letterhead, business card, and envelop)
Due 15 various stationary sets on the computer. So you will need to look at existing stationary sets.

Look at books on letterheads and business cards. Remember to have a focal point. You will need to do at least 15 variations on the computer. No hand sketches for this one.)
** Make sure you outline your type before presenting it to the class.

Look at Stationary:

Demo on designing rough ideas for Music Poster.


Homework:

1. Set up your poster sketches using Photoshop or illustrator.
(Have at least 5-6 compositional ideas.)
-Size at least 11 x 14- black and white
--no exceptions... we have very little time... so this must be done.

Create your design ideas using the program you feel comfortable in. The sketches are for placement and layout. You will need to gather resources and look at other designs. Remember to have a focal point. Do not do any special effects on the images. Place the elements that you think you will use in your poster. Roughly cut out each element and place into a 11 x 14 page. (Sketches can be by hand, in photoshop, or in illustrator. But final design and construction will be in illustrator.) - must be in grey scale/ black and white
