Overview of Photoshop

Demo #1: Class exercise on compositing.

Movie Assignments are given out to students

Homework:

1. Practice what you have learned, based on the demo

Work further on baby and building composite (From Demo in class). Try to clone out the people at the bottom.

2. Practice #1: Practice what you have learned, based on the demo

Find 3 images to composite together. 
The idea is to make the live animal or person look like they belong in the space.  It can be realistic or surrealistic.

No visible feathering of images.
No montages of image.

  • A background sky
  • A main scenery (like a forest, street, a building or automobile)
  • A live subject (animal, fish, insect, or person)

3. Read the handout on resolution and have questions for me for class on Thursday. (I switched it so I can talk with all the students on a one on one basis for Tuesday.)

4. Bring a blank CD for Teacher

5. Research your movie that was assigned: Go watch your movie if it is out in the theaters or rent the movie if it is available. Look at the Press Kit of your movie. Come up with some sketches of your idea. (Put those sketches in a notebook or on tracing paper whatever works the best.)

Demo #2: Eyes

Talk about students' work

Homework:

1. Practice #2: Work on the eyes like the demo today.

Take notes and determine the unique parts of the film. What stands out.

2. Watch your new movie

Take notes and determine the unique parts of the film. What stands out.

3. Continue to work on a sketches or comp of your movie Poster 1.

I will talk to every student on Tuesday.

4. Bring a blank DVD to copy the images for the movie you choose.

5. Please email me which movie you decided on and if you will need the images on a DVD.

If you have already copied the images from the teacher's station then please tell me that you do not need a dvd copy. But if you have not, then email me which movie you want and bring a DVD and I will make a copy for you.

Professor will go around an talk to each student about their sketches.

Homework:

1. Start putting your sketches of Movie Poster 1 into a computer comp. Have 3 rough ideas on the computer.

Make sure you start with an 11 x 17 --200 ppi image and put images in that layout.

2. Look at images for the Movie Poster 2: Key Art Awards.
Start sketches for either, Dreamgirls, Knocked Up or 300.
Sketches are due on thursday feb. 14th

Demo #3: Selecting Hair

Work in class on Movie Poster 1(Bourne, Sweeny, 30 days, Elizabeth, Atonement, Beowulf)

Create a Contact sheet with the images (do not print at school. Please print at home.)

Homework:

1. Practice #3: Work on Hair like demo.

Get a picture of a person with hair. Make sure it is a high res file and the hair has a light colored background. (From Demo in class).

2. Exercise #1: Go through tutorial in Photoshop book. - Chapter 5

This exercise will require you to submit 2 files:

  • Use the images from the CD in the book and create what the book explains.
  • Find your own images and go through the same steps the book has explained.

3. Work on 3 computer layouts for Movie Poster #1. (Bourne, Sweeny, 30 days, Elizabeth, Atonement, Beowulf)

2. Work on 20 Sketches for Movie Poster #2 (sketches will be checked on thursday feb. 21th)

These sketches are by hand and not on the computer. Come up with 20 sketches. 10 that are conceptual and 10 that are actor driven.

Demo #4: Making rain and mist (maybe making fire explosions)


Homework:

1. Practice #4: Make rain and mist on your own image.

Get a picture of a a building. Make sure the picture is dark and looks like a rainy day. Apply the rain. Try to make a reflection on the street to mimic the idea of a wet ground. (From Demo in class).

2. Exercise #2: Go through tutorial in Photoshop book. - Chapter 6 (Masks and Channels)

This exercise will require you to submit 2 files:

  • Use the images from the CD in the book and create what the book explains.
  • Find your own images and go through the same steps the book has explained.

3.Work on 20 Sketches for Movie Poster #2 (sketches will be checked on thursday feb. 21th)

Show the billing and logo placement.

Intro to Illustrator and using illustrator for type.

Homework:

1. Work on the billing and title for the Movie Poster #1(Bourne, Sweeny, 30 days, Elizabeth, Atonement, Beowulf)

Layout your billing in illustrator. Make sure you use the assigned typeface. Also put your title, actor and slogan in your poster.

2. Continue working on Movie poster #1(Bourne, Sweeny, 30 days, Elizabeth, Atonement, Beowulf)

Continue to work on the photo compositing and retouching for your poster.

3. Work on 20 Sketches for Movie Poster #2 (sketches will be checked on thursday feb. 21th)

These sketches are by hand and not on the computer. Come up with 20 sketches. 10 that are conceptual and 10 that are actor driven.

Demo #5: Custom Brushes


Homework:

1. Practice #5: Using the custom brushes

Create 3 custom brushes that you can use in your Movie poster
(From Demo in class).

2. Exercise #3: Go through tutorial in Photoshop book. - Chapter 8 (Typographic Design)

This exercise will require you to submit 2 files:

  • Use the images from the CD in the book and create what the book explains.
  • Find your own images and go through the same steps the book has explained.

3. Start to put together your layouts for Movie Poster #2 (Hollywood Reporter)

If you need to take the photos start on this. If you need to purchase a background or object, start on that as well. Give professor and update on what your plans are for the movie poster.

Week 6:

Tue 2/26

Professor will meet with Students to talk about their sketches.

Professor will look at Movie Poster #1.


Homework:

1. Work finalizing Movie Poster #1(Bourne, Sweeny, 30 days, Elizabeth, Atonement, Beowulf)

This will be due next Tuesday, on the computer.

2. Start putting your sketches of Movie Poster 2 (Hollywood Reporter) into a computer comp.

Make sure you start with an 11 x 17 --200 ppi image and put images in that layout.

3. Get in all Practice file (#1-5) and Exercise files (#1-3) by this thursday.

After this thursday these assignments will be considered late and you will get points deducted.

Midterm review
I will do a midterm review sheet to look at where you are. This happens the 7th week of the semester.

So get all your assignments in by this Thursday. I will be grading everything this weekend.

students must submit their three comps on teacher station before class.

Project #3: Musical artist promotion/ event poster

Part 1: Logo of Record label.
Part 2: Poster for musical performance


Homework:

1. Exercise #4: Chapter 5 (of the illustrator book)

Drawing with the Pen Tool

2. Come up with the following:

1. Name of musical artist (what is the genre)-No pop artists allowed. Must be another genre.

2. Have 5 different names of your record label

3. Begin type treatment for names. Begin sketches for names: at least 5 sketches for each name. (total 25)- this will be due on Thursday no exceptions.

3. Put your Movie Poster #2 (Hollywood Reporter) on the computer. Have 3 rough ideas on the computer for next weeks class.

Demo 6a: Illustrator tools and techniques 01

Vector Illustration website

  • Basic Shapes
  • Selecting points and deleting points.
  • Pen Tool (very important tool)- tutorial from book
  • Masking option
  • Compound path

While in class students will:

practice the pen tool in illustrator.
We must master the pen tool even if it is in illustrator.

Exercise #4: Chapter 5 (of the illustrator book)
If you have not done this already please do this in class.

Work on logo design in illustrator

Homework:

1. Must have 1 rough comp of Movie Poster #2 for teacher to look at.

Before spring break I really need to see the direction you are going for the hollywood reporter poster. If I have not met with you you will need to meet with me to see where you are heading.

2. Work on your logo design in illustrator.

3. Scan the sketch of the icon you choose to use for your logo.

4. Research the images you would like to use for your musical artist poster.

Think about the symbols and images that would represent the artist and their music.

Demo 6b: Tracing images in illustrator

Meet with students in class to talk about designs.

Homework: ----(You have a lot to do over spring break.)

1. Practice 6: Trace a basic image using the pen tool.

choose something that will go well with your logo. This can not be Live traced, it must be traced manually using the pen tool.

2. I want to see your Movie Poster #2 close to completion when you get back.

So if you have fallen behind you need to catch up.

3. I will need to see all the images you plan to use for your Musical Poster.

So make sure you have gathered all the images, shapes, symbols icons and illustrations that you might want to use for your design. You will need to start coming up with a design for your poster soon.

1. Focus on Hollywood reporter Key art Movie poster.

Thursday we will look at at least 2 photoshop comps with title. This will be done in class on the teacher station, so have this ready to show.

2. Continue to work on Logo

We will look at Logos on screen in front of class next week.

3. Have some reference images for your Music poster.

You will need to sketch out the design and layout of your Music Poster. So gather as much references as possible.

Layout all your logo designs. Put 2-3 logos to a page.

Talk about composition of your Rock Poster.

Homework:

1. Layout all your Logos (2-3 to a page)

You should have at least 10-15 variations of your logo. You can use one other color besides black. (White is the paper). (2 on a page makes 5 pages.)

2. Have at least 5-6 compositional ideas for your rock poster.

You will need to gather resources and look at other designs. Remember to have a focal point. (Sketches can be by hand or in photoshop if needed. But designing and construction will be in illustrator.

Due: 10-15 variations of your logo designs. (2-3 on a page)

Due: sketches for Rock poster (5-6 ideas).

Show how to layout a letter head and business card.


Homework:

1. Choose your 2-3 favorite logos

2. Layout a letterhead and business card for your Music Logo.

3. Scan sketches if they are by hand. refine sketches on computer if you used the computer.

Sign up to get your poster reviewed by Tomasz Opasinski.

He will be in room 333 on tuesday night at 7pm. You must sign up for him to critique and give you feedback on your posters. He will need to have the photoshop layered files.

 

Homework:

1. Print out 1 copy of your Movie Poster.

This must be printed 11 x 17, full bleed, mount on white foam core.

2. You must still print out your first movie poster and submit that as well.

This must be printed 11 x 17, full bleed, mounted on Foam Core.

3. Have you poster design rough digitized.

1. Set up your poster in illustrator.

Have a list of questions and problems for professor to answer.

2. If your poster is chosen to be in the key art awards you will have to make a 2nd print out by Friday.

This must be printed 11 x 17, full bleed, mount on white foam core
If you do not have time to do this you will need to print out and mount earlier. So be prepared to get this in at the last minute.
