Overview of Photoshop

Demo #1: Class exercise on compositing.

Movie Assignments are given out to students

Homework:

1. Practice what you have learned, based on the demo

Work further on baby and building composite (From Demo in class). Try to clone out the people at the bottom.

2. Practice #1: Practice what you have learned, based on the demo

Find 3 images to composite together.
The idea is to make the live animal or person look like they belong in the space.  It can be realistic or surrealistic.

No visible feathering of images.
No montages of image.

  • A background sky
  • A main scenery (like a forest, street, a building or automobile)
  • A live subject (animal, fish, insect, or person)

3. Research your movie that was assigned:

  • Go watch your movie if it is out in the theaters or rent the movie if it is available.
  • Take notes. What do you see? What objects in the movie stand out? Is there something in the movie you can use as a symbol?
  • Jot down words, phrases, and scenes that stand out.
  • Determine the unique parts of the film. What scenes stand out.
  • Think about what part of the movie moves you. (Put those notes in a notebook or typed out in a file.)
  • Gather as many images you can about the movie.
  • Research other movie posters. Look at movie posters that are in the same genre, comedy, drama, action, etc.

4. Start the 20 sketches on Movie Poster #1 - Due Thursday Sept. 2nd

(You will need to hand in these sketches in before class.)

All sketches must be detail oriented and must be clear enough that they can be read without your explanation.

Break

Studio work time:

**Student must load their practice #1 files (your own images) on the teachers' computer station

Meet with each student to look at their "building & baby" file.
Talk about what you have found about the movie you were assigned.

Students will work on their thumbnail sketches (look at these sketches first before you do your sketches.)

Homework:

1. Make a contact sheet of your images.

2. Have 20 sketches on Movie Poster #1 - Due Thursday Sept. 2nd

Sketches will need to be the same orientation as movie posters. (Do not make the sketches square or make the sketches horizontal. they should be about 2 inches by 3.5.)

(You will need to hand in these sketches before class.)

All sketches must be detail oriented and must be clear enough that they can be read without your explanation.

Use tracing paper if you can not draw.

Professor will not be able to talk to students in person about sketches. Therefore your sketches must be clear and detailed so she can take them home to look at for the next class meeting.

Begin to work on your movie poster

  • Setting up a canvas
  • Size and resolution- what is Resolution?
  • Color (CMYK Verses RGB)
  • Creating a rough layout of your poster: Positioning elements.

Studio time (In class)

Work on Movie Poster. Based on the sketches chosen by instructor, begin to put your images on the canvas and do a rough version of your layout.

If you still have to work on your sketches, then this is what you should be doing instead.

Homework:

1. Start putting your sketches of Movie Poster into a computer comp. Based on the sketches chosen by instructor, put your images on the canvas. (You should have at least 5 sketches chosen. Work on all 5. If you do not have at least 5 chosen that means there was not enough good layout ideas to choose from. You may have to go back to more sketches.

Make sure you start with an 11 x 17 --200 ppi image and put images in that layout.

If you still have to work on your sketches, then this is what you should be doing instead.

2. Read article on Resolution (Page 01, Page 02, Page 03)

3. Practice #4: Make rain and mist on your own image.

Get a picture of a a building. Make sure the picture is dark and looks like a rainy day. Apply the rain. Try to make a reflection on the street to mimic the idea of a wet ground. (From Demo in class).

4. Practice #5:
Find 2 tricks or tip about Photoshop (Somewhere online) it should relate to compositing or retouching.

Most people will choose the first link in a google search.
So go through a couple of links to find the one that works best for you.

Find a site that shows the steps to:

  • 1) Something new, you did not know about, but you learned.
  • 2) Something cool and interesting.

Send your links to that site to professor on Monday evening by 6pm.

FYI- You need your book by next week. Next thursdays homework will come from the book.

Look at students' posters

Talk about how to improve on composition.

Homework:

1. Practice #6: Go through tutorial in Photoshop book.

Introducing Image Warp - pg. 44 - 45 (CS4 Book)
Image Warp in combination - pg. 46- 47(CS4 Book)
Texture with Layer Modes- pg. 62-63 (CS4 Book)
Shadows on the wall- pg. 146 -147 (CS4 Book)

Layered masks: pg. 64 - 71 (CS4 Book)

This Practices will require you to submit 2 files for each technique (total 4 files):

  • Use the images from the book and create what the book explains.
  • Find your own images and go through the same steps the book has explained.
  • You can use the images in your Movie poster

3. Keep researching entertainment websites

Take screen grabs and create a file with a bunch of links.

4. Work on the billing and title for the Movie Poster #1

Layout your billing in illustrator. Make sure you use the assigned typeface. Also put your title, actor and slogan in your poster.

Week 6:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Tue 9/28

Professor will meet with Students to talk about their movie poster. This is the time to finalize and refine all the posters.

Professor will look at Movie Poster.

You will need to make some changes to your files. So be prepared.

Some issues you need to know:

  1. The billing x height should be 20% of title. So if your title is really big, then you need to make your title smaller because the billing will be huge. (there is an exception if your billing is part of the art. Then you put the title in the billing block as well.
  2. Focal point is the middle of the poster, so if there is an empty space in the middle, then you need to reposition.
  3. Do not repeat the actor 2x's. Put some other scenery or environment, but do not repeat the actor.
  4. Make sure the actor is looking at the audience.
  5. Do not ever show the behind of a person or dog.
  6. Do not put the title of the film around the stomach of a person, it makes them look fat.

Homework:

1. Work on finalizing Movie Poster

This will be due next Tue. Oct. 5 on the computer and then a print out will be due the following Tuesday Oct. 12th.

2. Start creating digital sketches for your website design

Project #4: Logo for fictious record company

You will need to make a logo for your fictious record company. This record company is the company that produces the music for your musical artist. It is not a redesign of an exsisting company, rather a new name. You will need to create a name for a new company. See homework for details.

Due on teacher's station: Practice #8

Demo:

  • Illustrator tools and techniques 01
  • Tracing objects using the Pen tool

In class:

  • find a simple object
  • trace it using the pen tool
