The Pewter Plate lunches

Join us for these "working lunches" where people bring ideas about lessons they want to improve and we work together to help them find ways that technology can help them with those improvements.

Schedule:

12:30 - 1:00 pm      Lunch & Discussion

1:00 - 1:15 pm        Volunteer overviews one tool they use

1:15 - 2:00 pm        Work session. Each teacher implements ideas presented in the discussion or overview that they want to use in their own classes.

Lunch is provided by a generous gift from Google, who believes that a full stomach leads to a mind full of ideas :-)

Sept 13

Discussion topic: Describe a time when you modified your teaching plan on-the-fly. What information caused you to change course?

Homework:

Complete the end-of-year survey.

May 10

Discussion topic: Wrap-up

Homework:

Complete the end-of-year survey.

April 26

Discussion topic: How can we quickly tell if students feel like they are learning anything in our classes?

Tool of the week: Knowledge Surveys (an application of Google Forms)

Homework:

Construct a knowledge survey as a Google Form for use at the end of the year. Try it in your class.

April 19

Discussion topic: How can we get feedback from students that is both constructive and critical?

Tool of the week: Using Google Forms.

Homework:

PART 1: FILL OUT A FORM

=========================

We'll start off by having you complete one giving me some feedback about the program so far. It should take about 10 minutes.

Fill out the form here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHlGcGVnVnRaWDhVLXdqWWJMcm9Kb3c6MQ#gid=0

PART 2: VIEW THE OTHER PEOPLE'S RESPONSE

===========================================

Then, view the responses to the form here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjpD0yp4mnSZdHlGcGVnVnRaWDhVLXdqWWJMcm9Kb3c

Some things to note about this experience:

* You should NOT need to be logged into Google to submit the form or view the results.

* Can you edit the spreadsheet with the results? No, because I set the page to Anyone with the Link can Access, but I did NOT check the box that gives you the ability to edit the spreadsheet.

* Go to the Form menu and choose Show Summary of Responses to see the standard summary.

* Can you tell who submitted each response? No. They are totally anonymous.

PART 3: PRACTICE CREATING YOUR OWN FORM

============================================

Ready to create your own form? Here are a few videos to help you along. I divided them up into three groups based on how long the videos are:

Too short:

Creating a form (1 minute): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VBGSaB3URs

Viewing form responses (23 seconds): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HXLqvZX2wM

Too Long:

An in-depth webinar (47 MINUTES): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4KqEBn2lwE

Just Right:

A good summary (10 minutes): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZEjmxTvR4k

PART 4: TRY IT IN A CLASS

=======================

Forms are a great way to collect information from your students about their thoughts about the course.

March 29

Discussion topic: What are the different parts of a ‘lesson’? How can technology help us do each segment better?

Tool of the week: Using Google Docs to create a collaborative workspace. Read more here.

Homework:

  1. 1)Make sure you have your gmail password.

  2. 2)Make your lunch suggestions for next time or vote on other ideas here.

  3. 3)Review the tool of the week (above), including the video demo if you didn’t catch all the steps during our session.

  4. 4)Try the tool of the week out. Be prepared to share your experience next time we meet.
