MIKE CURB ENDOWED CHAIR

In 2006 Mike Curb, Chairman and owner of Curb records and former Lt. Governor of California, donated $1 million to endow a chair in Music Industry Studies.

It is the only endowed chair within the College of Arts, Media and Communication and one of 7 across the university.

The M.I.S. program sincerely appreciates Mr. Curb's generosity!

Why the Cal. State University, Northridge Music Industry Studies degree tops them all––

Some universities offer “music business” degrees that interestingly enough, contain no music! Graduates with such degrees find limited job opportunities upon graduation.

We, on the other hand, learned from our friends in the Hollywood/Los Angeles music industry that a curriculum that combines music and business is more highly valued by employers. That means graduates of CSUN’s Music Industry Studies major have a considerably wider variety of job and career choices.

Another benefit for CSUN graduates is location, location, location! If you want to be in the music business, Los Angeles is the best place in the country to be. Today, virtually all motion picture and television music is produced in Hollywood. The same goes for nearly pop and a sizeable portion of jazz recordings. Simply stated, the heart and soul of the entire music industry is located in Los Angeles –– just minutes from the CSUN campus. As a result, our students begin networking in the music and entertainment industries the day they are admitted to the M.I.S. major. And when they graduate, they transition smoothly right into the music industry work force.

And let's not forget to mention the weather! Southern California’s weather trumps that of New York City, Nashville, Miami, Boulder and virtually all other cities where music business programs are offered.

Professionals do the teaching

Faculty members who are actively involved in various aspects of the music business world staff our program. Students learn from those who know the industry inside out.
