»MUS 189/389 Jazz Combo Class

Course Description:
In depth study of small group performance techniques including improvisation, melodic embellishment, balance, orchestration, and composition. This class will be taught with a "Master Class" approach. Groups will perform and be critiqued by the instructor and class.

Requirements:
I. Two hour class incorporating lecture, discussion, demonstration and performance of literature relegated to music written for the small jazz ensemble including jazz standards, bebop tunes, bossa nova etc.
II. A minimum of 2 hours per week of rehearsal with individual small groups.
III. Small group concert to be performed off of CSUN's campus
IV. A minimum of 3 original compositions must be submitted by each member of the combo.
1. Original melody based on pre-existing harmonic structure.
2. Original "modal" composition.
3. Original composition in any style.

Grades will be determined by the following:
Attendance - 50%
Assignments - 30%
Final Concert - 20%
