Course objective:
To learn basic arranging techniques pertaining to the jazz combo. Emphasis will be placed on writing for rhythm section and 1 to 5 horns.

Course Content:
Ranges of Trumpet,Trombone, Saxophones
In class demonstrations of rhythm section instruments and horns
Writing drum, bass, piano and guitar parts
One horn writing
Embellishing a melody
Two horn writing
Countermelodies (secondary lines)
Three horn writing - study "Art Blakey" arrangements
Four horn writing
Five horn writing
Sax ensemble chart

Grading policy:
Homework assignments including arranging deadlines and quiz's - 35%
Mid Term written exam covering material from the first 8 weeks. - 20%
Final cumulative written exam - 20%
Final project: 5 horn chart with rhythm section - 25%

Assignments are due on the date assigned. No exceptions. A late assignment will receive an automatic "F"grade.

Attendance policy:
Grade will be lowered 1/3 for every class missed over 10% of the total number of classes. 3 missed classes are allowed before your grade will be affected. Class begins precisely at the top of the hour!
