Course Objective:
Playing "changes", outlining chords emphasizing 3rds and 7ths in the context of standard tunes. Melodic/Motive development; connecting ideas with melodic, rhythmic and stylistic consistency in the bebop tradition.

Solo Transcription:
1 transcription will be due mid term. The solo transcription must be an entire solo consisting of a minimum of 4 choruses of blues or 2 choruses of a 32 bar form (approx. 50-70 bars). The solo may be written out and played with music.

Grade components:
Assignments/Quizzes - 25% (Written and playing assignments including ii- V-I's in all keys) Mid-Term - 25% (Playing exam covering materials from the first 8 weeks) Final - 25% (Playing and written exam to encompass material from the entire semester) Transcription - 25% (see "solo transcription")

Attendance:
Grade will be lowered 1/3 for every unexcused class missed over 10% of the total number of classes. (You are allowed 3 "absents" before your grade will be affected).
