»MUS 210AJ Jazz Keyboard Technique I

Course Objective:
Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. Play II-V-I progressions in all keys with several voicings and inversions
2. Interpret chord progressions from a lead sheet with appropriate voicings, rhythmic and stylistic accuracy.
3. Play blues progressions in several keys with a variety of voicings 4.Accompany simple melody in the right hand with chords in the left hand.

Grade Components:
Quizzes - Weekly playing examinations - 40% Midterm - Playing exam on tunes, progressions, and voicings - 25% Final - Cumulative playing exam from entire class - 35%

Attendance policy:
Grade will be lowered 1/3 for every class missed over 10% of the total number of classes. You are allowed 3 "absents" before your grade will be affected. Class begins precisely at the top of the hour! You will be graded "absent" if you are more than 5 minutes late at the beginning of class.

Course Content:
2 note Voicings (shell voicings)
ii-V-I voicings beginning with 3rd, 7th and root
ii-V-I Left hand voicings beginning with 3rd and 7th
3 note voicings
Adding 5th of 9th depending upon inversion of 3rd and 7th).
Minor ii-V-i voicings
3 note voicings both hands and left hand only
4 note voicings
Adding 9th and 13th to voicings ("Four note voicings")
Rootless voicings

Chord progressions in all keys with play-along CD.
Playing tunes; melody and accompaniment with play-along CD.
