The Portfolio
On Tuesday May 5, you will hand in a portfolio of your work from this semester to a committee of English 098 teachers. I will assign one portfolio grade, and another reader will read your complete portfolio and assign it a second grade. It is a blind reading-that is, each reader will not know the grade assigned by the other. In the case of a discrepancy, a third reader will decide your final grade.
The Portfolio consists of:
- Three
out-of-class essay packets. Each essay packet will be a clean, newly-revised "portfolio copy" of the essay stapled to your rough drafts, with a copy of the prompt question stapled to the top copy. (No workshop sheets, no grade sheets, no article copies.)
- One
in-class essay, just as you wrote it in class, with no revisions. (No grade sheet.)
- A cover letter introducing your essays and/or describing your experiences in English 098. Start it out "Dear Reader" and sign it with 098 Student, or your ID #, or your name.
All of the above must be placed in a folder with two horizontal pockets, exactly like the one you have used for your essays.
- Staple the final clean and revised copy of your essay to the rough drafts (two or more), then staple the prompt on top.
- Place each of the three essay "packets" in the right-hand pocket of your folder.
- Remove
the grade sheet from the blue book of the in-class essay.
- Staple the prompt to the inside front blue book cover, then place the blue book in the left-hand pocket of your folder. Place the cover letter on top of it. (See drawing.)
- If you would like to submit one or more of your essays for New Voices, please print out an extra final copy of that essay and staple it to an application. (See me for applications.)
LATE PORTFOLIOS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED. NO EXCEPTIONS.
I encourage you to work hard revising your essays, using all that you have learned this semester. If your portfolio does not get a passing grade, you do not pass English 098. Similarly, if you do not pass the classroom portion of this class, you do not pass the course.
