In the book The Soloist, we have read about Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless man who is mentally ill. However, there are many homeless people in and around Los Angeles who are not so disabled. For this essay, research ONE other homeless demographic in the Los Angeles area (eg. veterans, single-parent families, immigrants [legal or illegal], the unemployed, etc.). Explain the various causes of their homelessness and the particular problems of that specific group.

In addition to this, in your paper describe the resources that are available to help this particular group of people. Are these resources enough? Why? or Why not? In light of your research, what do you think is the best way to get these people off the street and into decent housing? Remember to address the concerns of your opposition.

Purpose: To write a persuasion essay where you do the following:

• Formulate a thesis by defining the issue
• Support your thesis with convincing evidence from research
• Develop and organize your ideas logically through exploration and revision
• Demonstrate your understanding of an argumentative essay structure which includes a counter argument
• Feel free to employ stylistic conventions including figurative language, tone, voice, etc.
• Expand thoroughly in your examples: show, don’t tell.
• Consider your audience, and remember, that while you may be writing to those that share your values (community, peers), you need to consider readers in other contexts.

• Four full pages minimum, five maximum.
• A minimum of three outside sources (photocopies/printouts of sources required)
• A personal interview may substitute for one of the above sources. Clear it with me first.
• Double-spaced, typed, with one-inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font
• MLA format for text citation (See handout and class notes)
• At least one LRC visit required
