Essay #1
Personal Narrative: The Images We Project
In the article "Never Too Buff" by John Cloud and Brandon Keim's "The Media Assault," several people comment that media pressure is connected to the emergence of men's new obsession with body image. Write an essay discussing whether this is true or not true. Support your perspective citing examples from Cloud's or Keim's article and your own experience.
In her essay "What I Think About the Fashion World" Liz Jones discusses her experiences and opinions about the excessively thin models in the fashion industry. Do you know someone who seems obsessed with his or her weight or who suffers from an eating disorder? Write an essay in which you discuss what you feel are the causes of the problem, including a response to Jones' contention that many eating disorders are directly influenced by the fashion industry. Do you agree with her? Why or why not? (Adapted from Goshgarian 60)
Several authors in this section discuss body image and the outside influences that they have responded to. Write an essay about a time when you received criticism or praise for your appearance. What did people notice about your body? How did it make you feel? How did you react? (Adapted from Goshgarian 78)
