Course Philosophy:

Reading is an essential part of your university life. To successfully participate in your courses you will need to find ways to decode the texts you encounter. This course will start you on a journey of discovery about texts, their place in the world and the people who produce them. So that I can measure how much you have learned, you must communicate to me the ideas you have encountered and your responses to those ideas, so writing is also an integral part of this reading course.

First-time freshmen are required to complete all developmental writing and math within the first year of enrollment, or they will be asked to "stop out" to complete the requirements elsewhere.

Required Texts:

Digging In Ed. Albert Garcia

The Least You Should Know About English Paige Wilson

The Things They Carried Tim O'Brien

New Voices, a CSUN Publication of Developmental Writing

A portable dictionary

Required Materials:

Three horizontal pocket folders: one for essays, one for freewrites, and one for storage

Email account (Activate your CSUN account)

Three bluebooks (available at Student Bookstore) for in-class essays

Notebook paper

Note: STOW AWAY AND SILENCE ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES DURING CLASS

Course Requirements: In order to receive Credit for this course you must fulfill the following:

Attendance: Since this is a participation-based class and not a lecture-based class, the attendance rules are different.

    1. Absences: We will work on reading and writing in every class. If you miss class, you miss important work that cannot be made up. Because of this your grade will be lowered after three absences, and you can be automatically failed after more than five absences (three weeks).
    2. Tardies: Class starts on time and lasts seventy-five minutes. It is disrespectful both to me and to your fellow students to interrupt the flow of the class by coming in late. If you are more than ten minutes late it counts as an absence. Be on time! (Allow plenty of time for traffic jams and to find a parking space.)

Assignments: NO LATE PAPERS.

*Participation in the discussions is required. You cannot participate if you have not read the assignment.

  1. All written assignments are to be completed before class on the day they are due.
  2. Reading Response Journal assignments are an essential component of this class and must be done before class starts. You may ask me about your grades for these at any time.
  3. Other on-line tasks are to be completed as assigned. If you do not have internet access from your home or dorm room, you must find a convenient computer lab for these. You must adjust your email address by the second week of school.

Writing Requirements:

    1. One Book Analysis--20%
    2. Two Reader Response Essays to short texts--15% each
    3. Two In-class essays--5% each
    4. A Reading Response Journal--15%

The Book Analysis and two Reader Response essays are to be workshopped and revised. They must be printed, double-spaced, 12 point type, one inch margins. The In-class essays are to be written once, in bluebooks, in the classroom.

Pop Quizzes:

There will be occasional pop quizzes both on the reading assignments and on the vocabulary words from the anthology. They will be simple--if you have done the reading. The quiz scores will count for 10% of your class grade.

Portfolio:

At the end of the semester, if you have satisfactorily completed all of the classroom work, you will be allowed to submit a portfolio of your essays to a committee for evaluation. The portfolio will contain:

1 Cover Letter

1 Book Analysis

1 In-class Essay

1 Reader Response Essay

Plagiarism:

Plagiarism is defined as copying someone else's words or ideas and presenting them as your own.

PLAGIARISM WILL RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE.
