Key Concepts

•      Effects of each hormone may be classified

–   HYPERsecretion or

–   HYPOsecretion.

 

•      HYPERsecretion effects are exaggerated normal actions of the hormones.

 

•      HYPOsecretion effects are weakness/absence of normal actions of the hormones

 

HYPERsecretion Effects

•     A gland either makes or releases too much hormone.

•     A hormone is degraded too slowly.

•     Another body site makes and secretes the hormone

 

HYPOsecretion Effects

•          Secretory cells are unable to produce or obtain adequate hormone precursors.

•          Secretory cells are unable to convert the precursors into the hormones.

•          The hormone is degraded too fast.

•          The hormone is inactivated by antibodies before reaching its target cell.

•          The target cell fails to respond to its hormone because of:
