Title of Session: The Dangerous Book for Teachers
Session Description for Selection Committee:

This workshop presents what happened when I discovered that dry ice bombs are illegal in California (Penal Code 12301). With the support of my students and administration, we undertook a crusade to investigate the scientific, legal and emotional aspects of our highly regulated society.

Like the Last Child in the Woods, we are a hardy band who believes kids are intrigued by science yet prevented from experiencing its exciting, hands on essence.

At a deeper level, there is tension in the science education community between microchemists, computer simulations and dry labs versus the more spectacular demonstrations.

Legislators actually described dry ice bombs as a chemical reaction! Shall we take a bus to Sacramento to petition the government? Stay tuned, 2008…

Summary of Session to be printed in Conference Program: "You Mean Dry Ice Bombs Are Illegal in California?" Follow the adventures of an intrepid science teacher and his students as they petition the Attorney General. Students still do care!
California science standard(s) and specific concept(s): Investigation & Experimentation - Grades 9 To 12 1.m. Investigate a science-based societal issue by researching the literature, analyzing data, and communicating the findings. Examples of issues include irradiation of food, cloning of animals by somatic cell nuclear transfer, choice of energy sources, and land and water use decisions in California.
