SED619 Bitmap Project - Fireworks
Nouveau demoiselle is French for "new damselfly." This is an imaginary creature, designed with insect components and textures rather than mammal fur or bird feathers. The frame is taken from an art nouveau stained glass panel, suggesting an early twentieth century feel. A few of the frame panels are broken, revealing the background. The Projects button shows through the stained glass when it is pressed.
The Pilot is a red bird, creating a playful relationship between the somewhat-mechanical insect and the more conventional organic figure of the bird. The pilot is the essential piece to reify the damselfly's unexpected role as a piloted contrivance! Our little red fellow also adds (it is hoped by the author) a humorous touch...
The metal plate behind the pilot suggests a mechanical heaviness, in contrast to the delicacy of the Franch name (and font) Nouveau demoiselle.
A governing principle is that the Damselfly cound be constructed with a few changes to the Hox gene complex -- it must be genetically reasonable. The Hox gene sequence governs basic body plan -- in arthropods, the number of body segments.
Finally, the frame is an organic part of the composition, not something tacked on. Its nouveau lines bring a note of antiquity to the damselfly, resonating with its wings and "pinstripes" on the body. The frame's colors have design ties to the composition. And the broken panes reveal the world behind the frame, helping free it from servitude as a simple picture.
